Assessment Tasks and Instructions

1                Overview

There are three assessments in this subject:

  • An online multiple choice test to be completed after the first two days of lectures. It will open on Friday, 21 January 2022 at 1700 and close on Thursday, 27 January 2022 at 0800. This a lecture and reading-related multiple choice test that will count 20% of the total mark.
  • An annotated bibliography of 1,200 words to be submitted by 1300 on 2 February The bibliography will support research for the research essay on this subject. The bibliography counts for 20% of the total mark.
  • A research essay of 2,300 words, to be submitted by 1300 on 16 February 2022. The topic for the essay is The essay counts for 60% of the total mark.

2                   Multiple choice test (20%)

  • An online multiple choice test will be set to be completed between the first two blocks of lectures. It will open on Friday, 21 January 2022 at 1700 and close on Thursday, 27 January 2022 at
  • The test will cover the text of the Topic guides for Topics 1, 2 and 3 as well as the prescribed reading in those topics (i.e. not the optional reading).

3                   Annotated bibliography (20%)

  • An annotated bibliography of 1,200 words must be submitted by 1300 on 2 February The bibliography will support research for the research assignment that must be submitted.

Some but not more than two of the sources may be taken from the lists in Topic 4.

  • The word length of the assignment is 1200 words. A bibliography, footnotes or reference list is not required. The word count of the body of the text should be stated clearly on the cover page of the assignment.

To avoid penalty, your work should be in the range 1000-1400 words. Students will be penalised 10% of the total mark for every 200 words (or part of 200 words) their work exceeds 1400 words or is less than 1000 words. For instance, if your provisional mark is 80% and the penalty is 10%, your final mark is 70%.

  • 1100 words - no penalty

  • Grading criteria: Your bibliography will be graded with reference to the following criteria:
    • Justification for the relevance of a selected source
    • Ability to critically and correctly analyse and summarise each source
    • Ability to identify how best to apply that source in your assignment (the ability to draw preliminary conclusions, e.g. regarding the limitations of the resource (if any) and how best to use it to support the research for the research essay or apply it in the actual drafting of the essay (e.g. the identification of further issues or topics for discovery or application arising from the resources)).
    • Technical presentation (language, editing, compliance with instructions)
