Acc BiologyNameNatalia Alvarez Plant LabPeriod2Date10/29/21 We know from ecology that plants are the foundation to our food webs, food chains, and ecological pyramids. This lab is meant to reiterate the idea that plants are autotrophs, meaning they have the ability to use light energy from the sun and transform it into chemical energy in the form of glucose and ultimately - carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. Without these important organic molecules, life as we know it would not exist. Another point of this lab is to remind us that 95% of the matter that goes into the plant comes from the carbon dioxide in the air. 1.Title: How Plants Recycle Matter and Transform Energy. 2.Problem: _________________________________________________________________ 3.Hypothesis:If I (summarize what you will do) then (say how tall you think each plant will grow in 2 weeks & the # of leaves each will have) _______________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 4.Equipment: (List everything you are using. Add more rows if needed.) Glass mason jarsWaterBeans Paper towelsChia seedsPumpkin seeds 5.Procedure: FindTWO DIFFERENT(ex. - not two beans) seed types (you might want 3-4 of the same type so you have backups.) * Seeds should be ones you can find in your home, not ones you have to buy. Seed ideas: bean, pumpkin, bell pepper, corn, pea, sunflower, cantaloupe, chia, tomato, etc (I highly recommend using a bean for one of them) Note: In order to count, photos must show aprogressio n of growth, not a picture of a seed and then all of a sudden pictures of a very tall plant. Each photo MUST have Name and Date a. Get 2 clear, colorless glasses, jars, or cups. b. Choose two different kinds of seeds to grow. Get them from your refrigerator, pantry, fruit bowl, etc. c. Fill the containers with paper towels or cotton. d. Put 3 or 4 of one kind of seed along the perimeter of the container. e. If possible, label the container with: Seed Type and Your Name f. Place the container in a lighted area, but not in direct sunlight. * Keep your seeds moist!!! g. Take a photo before germination, right after you set it up. Each plant should have its own separate, close-up photo. Every photo you take MUST have YOUR NAME and the DATE written on paper or a 3x5 card, not typed onto photo later. h. As soon as you see growth coming from your seeds take a photoof each plant separately and take quantitative measurements of the plant height, root length, and number of branches & leaves.Do not forget paper with name and date. i. Each day or every other day, take a side view, eye-level photoand measurethe plant height, root length, and number of branches & leaves. Record in your data table. You should have 8 photos after the seed sprouts.Do not forget paper with name and date. * If your plants are at least 4 cm after a total 8 days of data collection, then you are done with the lab. If you need more days of data to get there, please add on to your data table.
6.Data: You will be collecting data in the form of photos (qualitative data) and measurements (quantitative data) to provide evidence of that plants have the ability (as autotrophs) to transfer energy and non-living matter from sunlight, water, and air to produce living plant material.
