This is identity theft. The billing clerk had taken the financial information of the patient and used it to fulfill his own personal objectives. 2.George gives his unemployed twin brother his insurance card so he can go to the local express care for treatment for the flu. This is neither identity theft nor medical identity theft. George had himself given the insurance card to his brother to facilitate the treatment of flu. There was no theft involved in this case. 3.Dr. Morehouse employs a janitorial service that supplies him with discarded patient information from other facilities where they work. He then uses the information to submit claims for psychiatric services. This is medical identity theft as the doctor is using the patient information to submit claims. 4.A hacker enters your IT system and changes the blood type for every patient. This is not identity theft. Instead this is malicious attack and done to tarnish the image of the hospital.
