Consumer Diagnosis:

Bob has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia since he was 17 years old. Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder in which the ability of a person to react, behave and interact with the surroundings and reality becomes abnormal and the patient experiences hallucinations, delusions, speech and communication disruption, demotivation and cognitive impairment (Fišar, 2023). Moreover, Bob has also been recently diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes. Referring to Yildiz et al. (2023), hypertension is the increase in the pressure of the blood, ranging from 140/90 mm Hg or more, while diabetes is the inability of the body to use or produce insulin.

Aetiological factors

The aetiological factors are:

Genetics:

According to Sandstrom et al. (2019), genes play a big role in transferring this disease from one member of the family to another. Bob also has a genetic history of schizophrenia as his father was a schizophrenia patient and his sister had a bipolar affective disorder.

Abnormal brain development:

People having issues with brain development also might experience schizophrenia.

Substance use:

According to NHS (2023), using drugs might increase the risk of developing Schizophrenia, which is also the case with Bob.

Stress:

Stress is also a factor of schizophrenia, as NHS (2023) claims that emotional and mental stress triggers schizophrenia.

Epidemiology:

  • According to Better Health (n.d.), every 1 in 100 or between 150,000 and 200,000 Australians experience Schizophrenia. Around 20-30% of people perceive mild schizophrenia, while 10% of people commit suicide.
