Registration Requirements
According to NMBA (2023), one of the basic requirements for Registered Nurses (RNs) in Australia includes the criminal history of nurses, where nurses are required to declare their criminal history and should prove that their criminal history is not linked to their profession in any case. Another requirement is that the applicants should be capable of communicating in the English language sufficiently in a nursing context. However, applicants who speak English as a second language are required to take English proficiency tests, such as IELTS, OET, TOEFL and PTE (NMBA, 2022). Moreover, according to NMBA (2023) continued professional development is another requirement for RNs in Australia, where nurses are required to complete at least 20 hours of CPD. Another standard requirement is the recency of practice, where the board requires nurses to give proof of their recent connections with nursing practices to get registered. In addition, in compliance with the national law, the nurses are also required not to practice nursing in a professional context until they acquire professional indemnity insurance arrangements, which are important to address and resolve risks if practised by unlicensed practitioners.
The NMBA also emphasise the importance of having a professional identity amongst nurses, which according to Philippa et al. (2021, p.1) is the capability of nurses to depict attitudes, skills, values and beliefs and deliver the roles and responsibilities in accordance with their profession, when a student nurse transitions into a registered nurse. This is an important skill set in the nursing profession, as it reminds them about their responsibilities and helps them deliver their roles fully in a professional setting. Similarly, emotional intelligence is also considered an important nursing skill, as White and Grason (2019, p.1) have mentioned that it helps nurses to emotionally connect with the patients. This skill helps nurses develop understanding and a trusted bond with the patients, and makes them feel heard.
