Mental health problems have increased both in amount and complexity worldwide due to which the nations suffer as a whole. “The Adverse Childhood Experiences study found that the more adverse life events people experience prior to the age of 18, the greater the impact on health and well-being over the lifespan, including poor mental health, severe physical health problems, sexual and reproductive health issues, engaging in health-risk activities and premature death” (Anda et al. 2010) (Sweeney et al 2016). Trauma is a major determinant of health and well-being in a society. A single incident of trauma or complex trauma can affect a person’s behaviour and mental health in his childhood as well as adult life. It is unfortunate that people do not realize whether they are completely out of their trauma or not. Re-traumatization can also occur and is often because of any current incident which is related to the past events (Sweeney et al. 2016). This essay focuses on identifying the issues demonstrated in the video of Lisa, which may have contributed to problematic substance use. Moreover, I will discuss these issues by using the principles of Trauma-informed Care and Practice (TICP) which aims to understand the patient by all means and seeks to improve the health of the patient through treatment adherence, patient engagement, safety, trustworthiness and collaboration (Menschner and Maul 2016).
Firstly, it is important to understand the concept of Trauma-informed care and practice, which is a unique approach in understanding the causes of the inappropriate behaviour of the patient, as it seeks to provide a solution to that inappropriate behavior rather than criticizing the patient on it. The understanding of this concept will help in analyzing the video of the patient, Lisa. Trauma-informed care and practice is “…aiming to transform entire systems of care by embedding an understanding of traumatic stress response in all aspects of service delivery and placing priority on the individual’s safety, choice, and control” (Bryson 2017). As this approach is the current need of the societies, it is given importance in terms of planning and implementation, clear communication, training of trauma-informed workforce and a safe environment (Menschner and Maul 2016). The traumatic stress can be linked to various factors which the trauma-informed service provider would consider and will play the role of a collaborator rather than a caretaker (Bateman, Henderson, and Kezelman 2013) and will adopt different strategies or approaches to prevent the occurrence of trauma due to those factors.
