Assessment 1: Portfolio - Children, Families & Communities

This assessment required writing a portfolio of three reflective responses addressing unit content. The first topic focused on historical and contemporary constructions of childhood through Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. The response explored changes in childhood over the last 20–50 years, including digital engagement, family dynamics, and educational policy shifts, concerning the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and scholarly sources. The second topic focused on First Nations childhoods, specifically the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children seeing their identities and cultures reflected in the curriculum. The response emphasized the role of educators in creating intercultural learning spaces and aligning practice with EYLF outcomes. The third topic discussed gender equity in early childhood education using a scenario-based approach. It proposed anti-bias strategies for educators, classroom practices, and communication with families. All three responses demonstrated understanding of ULOs 1 and 2 by critically analyzing childhood constructions, identity development, and inclusive practices within Australian early childhood contexts.
