The second part of the video assignment involves preparing a 7-10 minute video presentation in the style of popular science. Popular science refers to providing an interpretation of science that is intended for a lay audience. Try to be creative with your video presentation and make it fun and enjoyable to watch (i.e. avoid simply voicing over a slideshow of unmanipulated images taken directly from the paper). The more fun the video is to watch, the more likely a lay audience will pay attention. In this video, you are expected to provide the following:
- A reference to the article and the authors.
Enough background information to allow for a lay audience to easily follow the science you are presenting.
A description of the key findings in the paper that are relevant to the field of gene expression.
A section describing the importance of these findings.
A section describing potential limitations to the study as well as ways these limitations can be ameliorated in future work.
What not to do:
- Do not spend time discussing things that are not relevant to the findings of the paper. Remember, you are presenting the findings that are relevant to gene expression, not the entire paper.
Do not forget that your audience is a lay person. Cater to your audience by avoiding jargon and complicated words and phrases.
Do not forget the science. Even though you are targeting a lay audience, we still expect the science to be adequately described.
Do not make a boring presentation (i.e. talking over a slideshow consisting of
unmanipulated images taken directly from the paper). Not only are there marks for creativity, but if it is difficult to watch your video then it will be difficult to understand the concepts you discuss.
Avoid long pauses to fill time. I can tell when pauses are unnatural and you will be penalized for artificially filling time in your video with pauses.
Avoid including videos produced by other people in your video assignment. We want you to be creative and using someone else's video is not creative.
