Students are required to write a reflective report about their current self-care and develop a personal well-being plan.

Task Description

To promote your safety and well-being, and that of your patients and colleagues, you will need to develop and maintain self-care practices as a foundation throughout your nursing career. To do this you will need practical tools to become aware of what best supports you and understand what can get in the way. In order for you to be successful in this assessment, you are required keep a private self-care diary for a week (recording things such as your energy levels, sleep quality, moods etc). This will allow you to see what already supports your well-being and what you are ready to change. There are also several practical self-care activities in Module 1, that will help you to experience and reflect on what supports your body and well-being.

Rationale

The aim of this assessment is to provide you with an opportunity to become aware and reflect on how you currently care for yourself and identify strategies that will enhance your well-being, and ability to provide safe clinical practice.

Task Instructions

Students are required to write a reflective report about their current self-care and develop a personal well-being plan. To achieve this, you are required to:

  1. Keep a diary, relating to your activities for a week
  2. At the end of the week, use your diary and blackboard reflections from Module 1 to identify what supports or impacts your well-being
  3. Identify patterns or themes from the diary and reflective activities on blackboard
  4. Describe any themes/patterns that you became aware of during the week of using the self-care diary.
  5. Describe what you realised about your current understanding and practice of self-care. This can include all aspects of physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.
  6. Write a reflection about what you observed, what that meant to you and strategies to develop your personal well-being plan.
  7. Describe practical strategies for a self-care/well-being plan for your nursing work and personal life. This can include physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being. When describing your strategies, consider the following:
    1. How will you prioritise the changes to make it achievable?
    2. What support/resources (if any) will you need?
    3. How will you review and adjust your well-being plan as needed?

Include relevant quotes/excerpts from your diary and blackboard reflections in the body of the text or include a table (as identified below).  NB. table content is not included in your word count.

  1. Use the rubric to identify the assessment criteria.
  2. To maximise your success in this assessment, it is essential that you attend all tutorial  sessions.
