Strategy for Improving Leadership Skills Assignment Help
Executive Summary
Leadership is generally considered an art, and in order to be able to successful leader one has to be a master of it. Leadership in any form of life can easily be achieved but once you achieve it, it will be hard to maintain it. It has been observed in the past that many were awarded the position of leaders but they couldn’t manage it, mainly because they lack the required skills, attribute, charisma. I believe in embracing responsibility, which can be considered as an attitude. I have dropped the word NO from my vocabulary. To better judge my leadership skills and make my self aware of my skills and tendency of leading teams, I took Myer Brigg test, participated in few questionnaires, as a result I got to know that my personality according to Myer Brigg test is ENTJ and overall I fall under the category of team leader. Further, I believe the other assessment instruments affirmed a couple of these elements. There is not just one skill that is required to be an effective leader, but there are many skills, which are different from each other, and they will definitely play an important role for me to be a successful leader. Leadership mainly requires inspirational and influential leaders to lead the team to accomplish the objectives and provide effective ideas for marketing and business growth, which I believe that I can avail while working in the telecommunication industry.

Introduction
In simple words, the overall process of leadership development can be considered as an effort (hopefully, planned in nature) which will further help in enhancing the learner’s capacity so that one can lead other individuals, groups and organizations. One of the most critical skills for any leader in any industry is his ability to manage and maintain his/her own learning (McNamara.C)
Background
Donald.H Mccannon states that “Leadership is action, not position” every person has a different perspective to the concept of leadership and as far as I am concern I have my own view of leadership. For me leadership is something, that one cannot ask for it, but one has to achieve it, earn it, struggle for it with skills, traits and attitude. I have to have not one quality but a wide range of qualities that will not only help me in being a leader but at the same time it will help me in developing my leadership capacity (Green. H).
I don’t want to be like any other leader from the past, I have learned a lot from their stories and it really inspired me a lot, but as far as I am concern I believe in my self and I like to do things my way. I have lead many teams for different projects in the past and I have resolved many conflicts with in the teams, I have been able to achieve results and was able to deliver my commitments. For me to be a successful leader I have to have people who can deliver according to my expectations and to make them do it, it’s my responsibility and my job to make them do it. It is my passion in a particular thing that I want to do, which will make me a successful leader. (Goleman, D., Boyatzis, R.E., & McKee, A. 2002)
I love volunteering for different projects, where I get to express my interest and passion. I take interest in my people, in their views, ideas, vision and what I have learned over the years. It’s always better to promise little and deliver a lot. Planning is another important thing for me to be successful when it comes to leadership. I love to plan for changes, accept them as opportunities and always looking to explore more of them.
Building Leadership profile (AS IS)
Considering the result based on Myers-Briggs assessment are very much subjective (Briggs, 1998). For me it was hard to interpret the result mainly because of the questions, majority of the questions in the test had very much more than one answers to them and I could have answered them either way, mainly depending on the situations.
The test was based on four different categories. That included extraversion or introversion, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling, and judging or perceiving.
Based on my result I scored strongly in the extraverted category, I completely feel justified with the result in this category, knowing the fact that I mostly look inside for directions, better understanding, and ask for meaning and further clarifications. I didn’t scored that well into the intuition category which simply means that I am more focused on the present and rely on concrete information that is available. Under the judging category I scored very well, mainly because of the reason that I like to have a very well planned and orchestrated approach to life.
With my ENTJ based result, my profile indicates that I am more of an extrovert person, a bit serious, not dependent on other, a lot practical, realistic and responsible. I should be using logic to decide on a course of action, and then work on it steadily.
Two factors
Skill: I believe more on skills that I have acquired with my experience in the professional career. My skills of dealing with people, communicating with my teammates and my views towards them is what I think is important (Hayes. K) For me there are few specific skills that are really important in one-way or the other. Firstly is passion. I am very much passionate about my work and what I do, how I do it. A person without passion cannot be a leader, as passion is the first and foremost thing for every individual to be an affective leader. According to my motivation test result it clearly shows that I love setting and achieving realistic goals, I enjoy the satisfaction of completing a difficult task, its all due to my passion that drives me a lot, and you can inspire so much in others through your own passion and enthusiasm. (Hayes. K) Secondly I cannot do everything on my own, though I would love to but still I can’t and for this purpose I have to delegate work to others effectively. And the best way to delegate work to other is I give them full control and freedom for their work, which in return gives them confidence and trust in their own abilities that they can do it. In my diary, responsibility comes in number 3. Though at times I give full control and ownership of specific tasks to my team members/employees yet I have to take the responsibility of their results at all time.
Attitude: It is something that is really important for me, attitude is the way of seeing things, how you respond to things, what importance others have in my life and what is important for me (Hayes. K, 2005).
According to Goleman and his associates the skills of emotional intelligence are (briefly):
- Self-Awareness: Is very important as to have self awareness as it mainly helps in knowing one’s internal states, preferences, resources, and intuitions.
- Self-Management: Managing ones’ internal states, impulses, and resources.
- Social Awareness: Awareness of others’ feelings, needs, and concerns.
- Relationship Management: Adeptness at inducing desirable responses in others.
Leadership Theory/Leader Analysis
Effective leaders do understand the fact that the overall importance of a good attitude is that it helps in building an effective organization. Everyone loves a winner, but majority of the people forget the struggles to the top. (Goleman, D., Boyatzis, R.E., & McKee, A. 2002) (Hayes. K) Both the authors argue that managers will better be able to relate to their employees. According to Hayes. K, understanding employees as well as customers is a necessity for successful organizations from the leaders perspective.
Organizations need individuals to get the work done on time and with quality, and require services of skilled and experienced leaders who can effectively control and coordinate with their team mates and get the work done properly within a given timeframe. Leadership influences the thoughts and behaviors of the people working in the same team. The leadership model discussed by Mastrangelo, Eddy and Lorenzet in the importance of personal and professional leadership is based on the professional and personal leadership (Owen, 2003).
Leadership Aspiration
My leadership style is not authoritarian; rather I like to lead teams in a friendly manner. I believe that every person or individual has the right to share his/her ideas thoughts and reflections and by doing so you always have the chance to come up with new things. I have feelings for others and that’s one of the reason that I believe in win – win situation. I encourage others to come forward and share their ideas and views rather then just completing their job. According to the LPI self observer form, I came to know that I am a leader by heart, I care for my team members and value their ideas, thoughts and work making me a great team leader.
GAP ANALYSIS
According to the results based on the personal leadership analysis there are few suggestions that I have listed for myself, few to highlight here are, I should try my best to identify any events of anxiety, if there are any than I should and must accept them. According to Johnson, (2003) one should identify his negative feelings toward others and in doing that, one must be able to change such feelings into positive outcomes. Another most important thing is to work towards building empathetic understanding.
For a person like me, I need opportunities to be able to realize my career goals, as well as my goals that are more related to leadership training and development. For me my values are subjective, based on my experience, education, training, and what views I hold towards leadership. As far as my personal leadership agenda is concerned, it is devoted to others as to myself. I want to develop and train others, through coaching, mentoring, and teamwork.
Industry Feedback
Well I have been working in the telecommunication industry for last 4 years now; I have been assigned on various tasks with different teams. One thing that I enjoyed about working in different teams is how one can learn from others, directly or indirectly.
I was lucky enough to be made as a leader of my group, though it was a small group of 4 team members and it was only for a competition within the company, though our group didn’t win that competition but I personally enjoyed the role I was made responsible but most importantly my whole team was happy with the way I led them for the whole month through various projects.
