Part B: Physical Activity Case Studies (30%)

Part A - Online Quiz 10%

You have 30 minutes to complete the quiz which has 25 multi-choice questions worth one mark each. The quiz will be automatically saved and submitted when the time expires. Case Study 1: About YOU and the 4-week Physical Activity Challenge

This case study is all about YOU. It is an opportunity to look at your own physical activity and sedentary behaviours in relation to the current Australian guidelines, set goals, consider the quality of measurement tools and participate in a population based physical activity intervention as a team.

  1. Assess your current level of physical activity and sedentary behaviour by the end of week 1 of semester (completed during the week 1 lab) and at the end of the 4-week challenge using the subjective measurement tool – IPAQ. Compare your physical activity and sedentary behavior with the Australian guidelines and discuss your Remember to use references.

We’ll write customized paper for you.

  1. Join a team of 4 people for the Get Active Victoria SPH10013 2022 4-week challenge (see CANVAS discussion and Lab 1). During the 4-week challenge you are to select a method to record your weekly contribution to your Teams progress in the physical activity challenge using an objective measurement tool. (You select the tool – you could consider apps, wearables, direct observation, pedometer, accelerometer – you will discount some of these because they will not be suitable and/or you may not have access to them. The list is to start you thinking only, you may select something else if you choose).

Evidence Required:

  • Measurement tool chosen and justification
  • Data of your weekly contribution to the teams progress (week 2-5 of semester) in the challenge as a table or
  1. Set some Individual goals for the 4-week Challenge. Discuss one (1) strategy (individual), supported by literature, that you used to meet your weekly physical activity target OR to increase your physical activity from baseline OR to meet a specific individual goal OR to increase your physical activity each week (whichever is applicable to you).

Evidence Required:

  • List one (1) Individual Goal
  • Discussion of strategy – referenced
  1. Set a Team goal for the 4-week Challenge. Discuss one (1) strategy (team), supported by literature, that as a team you used during the 4-week challenge to motivate all the group members to contribute and adhere to the Team goals. Each team member does not need to write about the same strategy, it is an individual perspective about the

Case Study 2: Auditing Physical Environments – The Built Environment (Shopping Centre)

This part of the assignment will demonstrate your understanding of auditing physical environments (built environments) within a community setting. You should be able to:

  1. identify factors that encourage physical
  2. identify factors that are potential barriers to physical
  3. understand how the factors you identify as enablers or barriers fit into the social ecological model and how the impact of one factor affects others.

In urban design, walkability is the measure of the overall walking conditions in an area. Factors which are commonly part of walkability indices include: shade, aesthetics, lighting, crossings, access to footpaths, traffic calming, driver behaviour, safety, crime. In this assessment you will explore factors affecting the walkability of a shopping centre, but you could easily examine this within a community neighbourhood.

Tasks: Shopping Centre Audit

Tasks: Shopping Centre Audit – ‘Virtual Visit’

  1. Select a shopping mall to Choose one of the following options:
    1. Visit your local large shopping centre to complete the audit in The shopping centre should feature at least two levels of shops to enable you to complete all tasks in the case study. If you are not sure if the centre you have chosen is suitable, please check with Kym ([email protected]) before you start.
    2. If you don’t have access to a suitable shopping centre or are not comfortable spending an extended period of time at one due to the current COVID situation, you can elect to complete the case study using one of the virtual tours provided in the links Choose from either Chadstone or Highpoint – you only have to do one.

Chadstone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZKXDCMFlQM Chadstone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLWRc2X3dvE Highpoint - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsFvcigDEEo

You are free to use other virtual tours of these two shopping centers to assist you if you want to.

Evidence Required:

  • a map of the shopping mall/center (you should be able to download it from their website) and website link for center. You should have a look at the layout of the map before you go on the tour (above).
  1. Take a ‘virtual’ tour of the Kazoo toyshop – link Does the layout of the toyshop allow you to walk easily around the shop? What features are barriers or enablers of walking through the store? Consider your response from the perspective of someone in a wheelchair and someone pushing a pram as well as yourself.

Evidence Required:

  • Responses to the questions about barriers and enablers
  1. Select one (1) level of the shopping center you selected in If you have chosen to complete the case study virtually, use the virtual tour to select the stores and use this in conjunction with your previous experience visiting a shopping mall.
    1. Identify three (3) stores that would make it very difficult for someone walking with a pram or in a wheelchair to access and describe why they are not easily
    2. Identify a store that allows good access for someone walking with a pram or in a wheelchair (you should easily be able to walk through all the aisles in the store and access all their goods whilst you are linked arms with another person). What are the features of this store that make it accessible?
    3. Estimate the approximate distance between the seated areas on your chosen level of the shopping Who would benefit from having seated areas along the way and why?
    4. Mark on the map where the stairs are located. Are they easily located compared to the elevators, travellators and escalators? If you can’t locate any stairs then make a note that this is the Why would you be interested in where the stairs are located when you are doing a physical activity audit?
    5. Other than those covered above, outline two (2) other design features of the shopping center on that level that would enable people to be active within the context of the social- ecological
    6. Other than those covered above, describe two (2) other design features of the shopping center on that level that would be a barrier to people being active within the context of the social-ecological

Evidence Required:

  • Map with stairs
  • Responses to the questions
  1. As a physical activity consultant to architects responsible for renovating an older shopping center you are to use the information that you have identified during your audit, as well as evidence from the literature (this means you need to use references in your rationale below), to provide suggestions that will ensure that the renovated center encourages people to be active within the context of the social-ecological model.

Þ Include at least 10 features you would recommend the architect include in the design or policies for this new shopping center with a rationale for each. Make sure you consider all aspects of the social-ecological model.

Evidence Required:

  • Description and rationale for your 10 design features
