The introduction

Start with a nice story about a woman I met near the flinders street station while I was going to my job, as student ambassador in la Trobe city building. She was selling The Big Issue magazine, and at that time I did not have much knowledge about it which made feel less passionate to work with them, So I decided to stop and I asked her about the organisation and what are you selling, how do you find it and question lead to the other question, that lady (her name is Marian)was a role model for everyone, she suffered since her childhood and no family were their to support her and no friends but she decided to not give up and look for work and life, she said “I want to feel that I am in my community not a pariah”. Then she pointed at homless person, then she said: he still has the choice but he does not want to work. Then she showed me an article in one of the magazine was about her journey and it has her photo , so I asked her to buy one and sign on her article , she was proud and happy and asked me what is my name, and she did. After that each time after that when I passed from that area I stop to say hi and chat for a bit and she still knows my name. So more friends. Anyway, after that; I relized how important this organisation and how big impact can do for the community to let them feel about the inclusion.

  1. An overview of your host organisation, including its main purpose, vision, mission, values, and services?

I AM doing my placement with The big Issue and supporting the North Melbourne Women’s Program.

  • The Big Issue Australia is an independent community organisation that develops and operates social enterprises and creative, sustainable solutions to homelessness; providing opportunities for homeless and marginalised people to positively change their lives.
  • The Community Street Soccer Program, known as Street Soccer, uses the power of sport to empower homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged to achieve positive personal outcomes to reach their potential. It changes lives and creates healthier communities across Australia.
  • Street Soccer involves males and females getting together once a week (2 hours per week) for fun soccer training and matches. Equipment and a dedicated Street Soccer coach are provided at each location.
  • The program aims to achieve outcomes for its participants in three key areas: sport access / participation, health, and social inclusion.
  • During this placement I will work specifically with two all women Street Soccer Programs at North Melbourne and Dandenong.
  • Host supervisor name: George Halkias
  • My program coordinator and ONE of the coaches in the north Melbourne programs is Malitza Banach
  • My role and skills

Your role as an intern, including the skills and knowledge that are required for the internship job.

  • Help assess and research the key barriers to the program for disadvantaged women (which I did in the survey and interview with six different nationalities to cover bigger area of the barrires understanding) the ladies in the interview are from: ( Australian, Saudi, Iraqi, Somali, Indian and Chinese)
  • Support the delivery of the program in person through participation and mentoring of participants (which I do when I go each Thursday to play with malitsa and the ladies in the north Melbourne community centre)
  • Research the local service landscape and help develop strategy to increase program participation ( which I did by asking my kids school to promote for this program and sent the survey to the parents as well as do  a friendly match for the girls and their parents to explain the meaning of STREET SOCCER so knowledge from the roots)
  • Support local program coordinators to recruit more women and disseminate information (I used my connections with the Saudi community and motivate the females I know to attend these matches)
  • Support the delivery of program events ( I spoke with the Saudi Clube in Melbourne to cooperate with the Big Issue and initiate a friendly matches for females and future tournaments between the females in north Melbourne and in Dandenong areas) because it’s the two places for females only to play)
  • Support the development of health promotion activities and information (I asked couple of questions in the survey about how much you see the sport is beneficial for your health and most of the responses were too high) which is what we are seeking to inlight in their daily lifestyle, (its not for fun, its for Encourage women that sports has health benefits).
  • An overview of your project, including the objectives, purpose, and key project outcomes
  • A challenge as we know but we are working to address the barriers that we know exist across female participation in sport and community. Which after the survey and the interviews I found the most common barrires are
  • spread the word for us the program by:
  • Recruit more women to Street Soccer and intiate more events
  • How you will apply what you have learnt in your degree to the project. And what skills I can develop in this project.

Therefore, to apply some theoretical perspectives from my studies to this project:

I need fundamental data to initiate productive project: so I started with

(Survey to address the problems (barriers) then use problem solving strategies).

by distributed the questioneer through social media such as WhatsApp and Nextdoor as well as I emailed it to my kids’ school staff and parents.

Because I wanted to cover different:

  • Demographic and cultural aspects
  • Also, Marketing: I consider myself a social person So I can use this skill with the survey to be the first step of spreading the STREET SOCCER term more,
  • Also get the benefits of the social media channels by deliver it online.
  • Leadership Concept is one of my major skill especially (Servant leader)(definition with the source) :

Since I was in my schools then get married very young, travelled to Australia when I was 18, get my first daughter when I was 20 and completing my bachelor degree while having two kids and no family around me to support at that time. As well as, supporting my partner to finish his medicine degree. Therefore, to lead this project, I had to plan it very wisely and I spoke with my kids school to run some soccer programs and let the students’ parents involve in this program.

  • ------
  • HOW DO I IMPROVED THESE SKILLS:
  •
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Identifiable leadership skills
  • Ability to engage and develop relationships with disadvantaged people
  • Ability to engage and develop relationships with community agencies, government, and business
  • Some understanding of factors in the barriers to find sustainable solutions.
  • To be desirable but not essential activity
  • I hope to improve more from the internship:
  • the experience to think creatively and without limits
  • I can operate ethically and with integrity solving business problems
  • The perfect way to communicate with other agencies for support and expanding.
  • Demonstrate high skills in project development
  • SUCH AS:
  • Collect data to initiate the project productively
  • Work within the budget guidelines
  • Maintain professional standards for the organisation

WHAT WILL I DO OR CHANGE IF I HAVE THE CHANCE TO DO IT AGAIN? (Also I can use some of them in my skills and what I have done so far)

  • Since the program has a time limit, I would say if it’s on the summer we can motivate more people to join.
  • If I can change the time of our weekly match, I will be able to attend for the whole time, because it is from 1to 3, because I drive 35 minutes to the north Melbourne community centre (which is where we play with the other ladies), so I have to leave at 2:15 each time to pick up my kids from their school except in their holidays which I took them with me twice and they enjoyed it. (I can use it as one of the challenge too)
  • Also, with the Saudi Club if we have more time, we could do many events and tournaments and initiate more games for women to participate. But because The Saudi Club members were busy with the Saudi National Day EVENTS, I need to wait until it finished which will be after the 30th of this month. (I can use it as one of the challenge too). But In a positive way they loved my idea and they were happy to cooperate ALSO, they asked me to be a member in the sport department in the Saudi Club.
  • I preferer if there are more programs to engage or go with my supervisor to different events just to gain different.
