Giocarlo Del Rio Prof. Patricia Warman ENC1930 1/12/23 Building Resilience Assignment 1.Rose says that pursuing meaning can promote resilience. What are the things that drive you and give meaning to your life (passions, goals, and dreams)? When you're dealing with stress, what might it look like to turn your focus to one of these purposeful activities in the midst of a challenging day? 2.In the second video, Daniel Goleman notes that "focused attention is an endangered species". At what times do you find yourself most distracted? What are some ways that you can intentionally cut down on multi-tasking to become more focused? 3.The third video combines focus and awareness. By focusing and slowing down your mind, you're more aware of the kinds of thoughts that derail you. After doing the guided meditation, write about what you encountered: What kinds of thoughts and feelings came up? Were you able to notice them and let them pass? Do you think a practice like this could be helpful to you in the future? If so, how? 1.For me personally the way I deal with stress would be to listen to music but specifically a playlist I made on spotify that I use to sleep most nights. The playlist consists of songs without any singing so I can just concentrate on the music and not really think about anything else. When I do it at home, I listen to the music laying down on my bed with my eyes closed but if I'm at campus I just sit on one of the benches.
2.I find myself most distracted when I'm at class sitting still at my desk. Most of the time it's hard for me to sit entirely still so I tap on the desk with my fingers or tap my foot onto the ground, basically any type of secondary minor thing I can do with my body allows me to concentrate better on the task I'm being asked to do by a professor. Another time I can find myself distracted would be while doing homework in my apartment. Most of the time I use the split screen feature on my laptop to have my assignment open on one side with a video or show on the other. Most of the time I'm still able to do the assignment fine unless it's in a foreign language since I can't really do an assignment while reading subtitles. 3.I definitely think that being able to be fully aware of your surroundings and being able to shut down what is currently distracting you from the task at hand is important. During the guided meditation I just was thinking about what I'm going to talk about for this assignment and thinking about when I can start it so afterwards I can play videogames with my friends. The guided mediation did help me by allowing me to fully think and plan about when I'm going to begin my assignments, what order to do them, and how do get them done in the most efficient way possible.
