Assessment 2: 2,000-word research essay
Purpose:
The purpose of the essay is to gain and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of one threshold security issue and to test your ability to undertake research, and construct a clear and coherent argument in response to a research question.
Task:
This task involves a standard research essay on one of the weekly topics. True to the enquiry-based approach used in this seminar we will finalise the essay topics to align with the curriculum.
The enduring theme of this seminar is how we make sense of the changing nature of insecurity and threats. So a unifying question would be:
In what senses is (topic X)* a security threat and does this justify making it a priority?
‘Senses’ refers to subsidiary questions such as: What’s the significance of the threat? Who says? A threat to whom or what? What scales of threat should you refer to? Etc.
