PFCC in Critical Care-Reflective Analysis

Executive Summary:

During the placement in a reputed referral and teaching hospital namely Tweed Valley Hospital, I came across many clinical pharmacists in different state-of-the-art specialized wards such as emergency, trauma, women’s health, cardiology, renal, cancer care, antimicrobial stewardship, ICU, surgical and mental health. During my rotations I valuable insights were gained related to the role of pharmacist in a multidisciplinary setting. My primary research focuses on the use of effective use of phosphate in surgical wards, a crucial element of patient care in the peri-operative process. With the placements, I received hands-on experience in applying clinical pharmaceutical practices, which aligned with my career goals. Observing pharmacists in diverse roles provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the quality use of medicines (QUM), which is enhancing medicine usage, prescription, non-prescription and complementary medicine by healthcare professionals and decision-makers, and patient-centred care that reinforced the significance of collaboration among the healthcare providers.

With this exposure, I developed in professional and personal aspects as I gained confidence in my skills and abilities while working in the healthcare team and contributing to patient care. This placement helped me with my critical thinking, adaptability and communication skills, enhancing my skills to further grow in clinical pharmacy. This placement reinforced my career aspiration and facilitated my professional growth immensely inspired by the preceptor who mentored me in the specialized healthcare settings and professionally guided me through complex cases.
