Introduction

Today’s organisations are characterised by employees from diverse background coming together to achieve the organisational goals. A major reason behind the above is the globalisation and therefore the organisations must have an effective diversity management policy (Green et al. 2002), which is discussed below. 

Significance of diversity in an organisation

Green et al (2002) argued that modern organisations are competing in a global economic framework. Arora and Jain (2018) argued that these organisations are made up of diverse employees in terms of several factors including gender, personality, ethnicity, cultural beliefs, and marital and social status. A diverse workforce can strengthen an organisation in three aspects: productivity, innovation, and sustainability. This could be attributed to the availability of diverse ideas and skills due to the diverse background of the employees (Hudson Jr., 2014). Thus, as suggested by Arora and Jain (2018), diversity management is a necessity to create an effective workplace, for which certain strategies are presented below.

Diversity Management Strategies

Green et al (2002) recommended that managers must learn new skills to make the organisation culture accommodating to diversity. The key skill in diversity management is people management, however, Green et al (2002) recommended that a manager must also learn legal aspects of diversity so that the organisational environment provides equal opportunities for all the employees to grow. Traditionally, the focus has been on managing the diversity, however, Shore et al. (2009) recommended that there is a need is to focus on how diversity can create possibilities and opportunities for organisations. A recommended way to achieve the above is to link diversity progress with the business performance at three levels: individual, group and organisational (Arora & Jain, 2018).
