Assistance on Report Writing

Assignment Overview

The Smart Campus initiative at Swinburne seeks to address as a priority the student experience and building management challenges facing Swinburne University.

The key longer-term objectives are to:

  • Establish a competitive advantage in student campus and learning experience, and
  • Advance the development of the Swinburne Innovation

Construction of the Swinburne Innovation Centre at the Hawthorn Campus at Swinburne University provides a ‘living laboratory’ in which to test innovative technology approaches, learn from them, refine them as needed, and scale them across the Swinburne’s campus network and international campuses as makes sense.

The new digital infrastructure of Swinburne’s Innovation Centre building will enable Swinburne to explore new student services and facilities management models including:

  • Improving the student campus and learning experience through a more innovative use of smart networking technologies to allow Swinburne’s students to access services across different technology platforms including banking platforms, housing and rental platforms, government platforms, and social networking platforms, and
  • The application of IoT (Internet of Things) technologies to better regulate building management including air conditioning, air purification, lighting, solar and wind energy, occupancy, and teaching

It is envisaged that improvements to student’s campus and learning experience will be based on Swinburne’s own digital networking platform. The goal of this platform will be to enable students to integrate the different online platforms/ service providers they regularly use in their everyday life when at university. Previously, if a Swinburne student wanted to access Canvas and at the same time check their bank balance, review their credit card purchases, update/ review their social network page, and also check the progress of a job application or rental application, the student would have to navigate across different applications swapping in and out of screens to navigate to the desired page. The user-centered-experience opportunities through Swinburne’s own digital networking platform and partnerships with particular third-party social networking, accommodation, employment, government and banking/ financial services will allow Swinburne to offer a state-of-the-art online campus and learning experience.

From a building management perspective, Swinburne can either retro fit IoT technologies to existing buildings or invest in new buildings that incorporate IoT technologies. IoT technologies are transforming the way we think about spaces and how we can improve the performance of buildings. Smart technologies enable the integration and automation of a building's electrical and mechanical systems to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the building, improve productivity and reliability, well-being and sustainability, operational costs, down-time, and safety. In many countries, universities are leading the way in the design and development of smart buildings. Swinburne is looking to its Innovation Centre to make it a global leader in smart building design.

The data collected from these digital services can potentially offer new marketing, learning, student services and sustainability insights and opportunities for Swinburne University.
