Learning Outcomes
This assessment assesses the following Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO) and related Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLO):
| Unit Learning Outcome (ULO) | Graduate Learning Outcome (GLO) |
|---|---|
| ULO 1: Examine and describe the application and relevance of digital health to the broader healthcare landscape
ULO 2: Interpret the theories of digital health to specific real-world contexts to identify key problems and/or challenges ULO 5: Recognise and report the value and benefit of technology solutions in healthcare contexts ULO 6: Analyse the principles of co-design in digital health |
GLO 1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities: appropriate to the level of study related to a discipline or profession.
GLO 3: Digital literacy: using technologies to find, use and disseminate information. GLO 4: Critical thinking: evaluating information using critical and analytical thinking and judgment. GLO 5: Problem solving: creating solutions to authentic (real world and ill-defined) problems. GLO 8: Global citizenship: engaging ethically and productively in the professional context and with diverse communities and cultures in a global context. |
Purpose
The purpose of this research report is to demonstrate critical thinking skills by evaluating a real-life digital health implementation. These demonstrated skills will be helpful for the student in subsequent situations where the student may be participating in developing a business case or designing or implementing a digital health solution.
Task Details
Prepare a 1,500-word research report critically evaluating a digital health solution implemented in Australia or internationally. Choose a well-documented contemporary solution that you are either directly aware of, examples from the unit lectures/seminars or readings, or that you have learned about during your research of literature. This could be My Health Record, an electronic medical records system in another country, a telehealth or a remote digital health monitoring initiative, or an mHealth application. These are just some examples – try and find something of relevance and interest to you. Your choice should be guided by relevant and credible evidence on the solution (e.g. an evaluation report by a credible body, a systematic review of various solutions, multiple research papers on similar solutions, etc.) since we are not expecting you to undertake any primary research for this assessment task.
Your report should include:
1. The topic of the report that clearly states the specific healthcare environment and digital health question and solution you have chosen to examine
2. An Introduction that sets out a brief history and/or context of the chosen healthcare environment, health challenge that needs to be solved, and the digital health solution
3. A brief literature review of relevant research that you have found to inform and support your analysis / examination. This should include searching one multidisciplinary academic database (such as EBSCOHost Databases or Scopus) for relevant research papers and including between 5-10 relevant references to support your analysis/ examination.
4. Your critical evaluation of the solution's outcomes, which should consider at least some of the below elements:
(a) Was the identified need and target population clear for the initiative?
(b) What were the expected benefits and success criteria for the stakeholders clear and were they achieved?
(c) Did the initiative have any scalability potential beyond the immediate solution implementation?
(d) Was there a suitable change and adoption strategy?
(e) Were unintended consequences and risks considered?
(f) Was a cost-benefit analysis performed?
5. Discussion of lessons learned, recommendations, and open questions for future implementations
6. Recommendations and conclusions for any similar solution to be even more successful
Note: if you need to make assumptions about the healthcare environment or digital health solution that is not provided in the evidence you find (i.e., information you feel that you needed was not provided, so you made it up) then please make clear what assumptions you are making.
