The purpose of this assessment is to ensure that you have a good understanding of the key background issues in Global Englishes.

Choose 2 questions from the list below dealing with central concerns from the first part of the subject. Write 600-650 words on each question. The total word limit is 1250 words.

- In your view, is the global spread of English a utopian dream or a killer of languages (Tollefson, 2000)?

- Assess the strengths and weaknesses of Phillipson's concept of 'linguistic imperialism'.

- Who owns the English language? What are some implications of this question?

You should refer to the prescribed readings relevant to each question. You should use at least 5 references from the subject readings. The best responses will critically analyse and integrate readings from across the different Units/Modules for each response. You may also refer to ideas and readings beyond Global Englishes, where relevant, but these should not be main points of your responses.
