Assessment Task

Write a reflective journal of 500 words on how your opinions and views of social, historical and cultural aspects of healthcare may have been challenged so far in the trimester in relation to your learnings about the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Context

This assessment aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the key concepts of cultural diversity and cultural awareness, specifically those that impact the interpretation and delivery of culturally competent health services. Scenarios depicting different aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural diversity and concerns will be used to address the importance and benefits of cultural awareness and understanding for the health professional.

You will develop critical skills as you communicate thoughts, feelings and experiences. You will also be expected to express how the presented scenarios, and knowledge gained from the subject will guide you going forward professionally.

Reflective writing is evidence of reflective thinking, and is a process where you can learn you’re your experiences. In particular, the reflective journal assessment in this subject, supports you to explore and articulate your intercultural learning and its relevance to your personal, social and professional life.

Instructions

Task 1: Reflect on the Key Concepts

• Reflect on what you have learnt during the first 3-4 week of this subject that is new to you about the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Identify up to eight (8) key concepts of cultural diversity and awareness you have
• Using the Decision Wheel, rate each key concept from 1 – 10 (1 being low and 10 being high) to indicate how much (you feel) you now understand each concept.

• You may change key concepts and ratings in the wheel as many times as you wish before downloading and saving a final version to submit with your reflective journal.

Submission Instructions

Submit your wheel and reflective journal under the ‘Reflective Journal’ link via Assessment 1 in main navigation menu in the FPH201: First Peoples Culture, History and Healthcare Blackboard subject site. The Learning Facilitator will provide feedback via the Grade Centre in the LMS portal. Feedback can be viewed in My Grades.

Submission tip: Once you have added your Reflective Piece WORD document, click ‘Browse your Computer’ to also attach your saved Wheel appendix in the same submission.
