A comprehensive assessment in mental health social work is a collaborative exploration of the client’s life domains, including strengths and areas where there may be issues. Social workers also need a clear understanding of the social perspectives on mental health. A good therapeutic relationship is required with the client in order to gather relevant and accurate information, and as social workers we also need to retain our critical lens whilst working in the medical model and respecting the client’s recovery experience.
