AT3 Instructions

Assessment Task 3 is the collation of a communications portfolio. Students will create 6 samples of a range of communications, typically found in an education workplace setting. This must include two communications each with children, colleagues, and parents/carers, and one must be in a digital multi-modal format. The portfolio will then be evaluated in terms of its effectiveness, as defined across the unit content, in a 1000-word reflection with connections to supportive research.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate 
effective professional communication skills when working with children, colleagues, and parents/carers. This will include consideration of content, format, audience, purpose, and register. They must also reflect ideals of inclusive, safe and ethical communication.

Purpose

Create and reflect on a portfolio of workplace communications that reach out to children, colleagues, and parents, effectively sharing information with all targeted stakeholders. The samples within this portfolio should reflect your understanding of what you know is important in professional communication. It is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your ability to create communications that exhibit the models, techniques and skills discussed throughout this unit.

Format

A portfolio of 6 pieces of communication which includes:

2 communications with students,

2 communications with colleagues,

and

2 communications with parents/carers.

One of the above communications should also demonstrate the use of digital or multi-modal technology.

These portfolio pieces might include:

  • Email
  • Unit plans
  • Instructions
  • Newsletter article
  • Permission notes
  • Reporting on progress
  • Feedback
  • Modelled teaching

They can be represented as written and visual modes (diagrams, pictures etc…)

Your portfolio can contain samples of communication that you were a part of on previous placements, in current work within an education setting, or ones that are specifically created for the purposes of this unit. All pieces of communication must be written by you.

You may use AI technology to draft your communication but only as discussed and practised in Module 5 of the unit. All use of AI technology must be declared and the added improvements annotated on the final product. The use AI technology is permissible in the portfolio section only. It is not allowed in the writing of the evaluation.

Structure

Part A: Your assignment will include your six portfolio pieces (as above). The portfolio can be uploaded as part of the word doc. It can include the whole communication or specific, relevant excerpts, e.g. the explicitly modelled teaching component of a lesson, presented as a transcript. Into 1000 words.

Part B:1000-word evaluation of the portfolio, discussing the effectiveness and limitations of the communication strategies. If AI technology has been employed, this should form part of your evaluation too. This evaluation should be supported by relevant academic references. Your evaluation can focus on categories within the samples. E.g., you can evaluate the child, colleague and parent samples as separate groups; or alternatively you might evaluate the spoken, written and digital communications as separate groups. This structure of the evaluation is up to you. The evaluation must demonstrate your ability to apply theory and research to practical models of communication.

Assessment Weighting

This assignment is worth 50% of your total grade. It is a critical task, which must be completed to a PASS standard or above, in order to PASS the unit.

Step One:

Create your six samples for your portfolio according to the guidelines.

Step Two:

Review and consider the effectiveness of each piece as a communication in a child care setting. Apply the ideas learnt through communication theory, professional ethics and inclusivity, purpose and audience and representational systems as measures in your evaluation. Consider what might be adjusted so as to further increase the effectiveness of each sample.

Step Three:

Using your evaluation notes, construct an essay style evaluation that discusses the effective elements of the samples and the limitations.

Step Four:

Submit your portfolio of samples and your written evaluation as one document to CANVAS.
