Assignment Essay (4000 words)

Choose a tourist destination which is potentially fragile both in terms of culture and environment. Look at the potential socio-cultural issues and impacts of tourism on the host destination. Analyse and critically evaluate the challenges of the socio-cultural and environmental issues. Suggest positive strategies which could be employed to ensure more sustainable tourism. 

There will be a full Assignment Briefing in the seminar (See the MIP).

Where possible, your case study should include:

• A brief summary of the socio-cultural and environmental issues.  Summarize  the location and the society and culture and explain and justify why  it has been chosen,
• A brief overview of past and current tourism in this region and host perceptions of tourism development in the region.
• Analyse the main socio-cultural issues and impacts  associated with tourism and other threats to this region.
• Critically evaluate these impacts, issues and threats to the hosts’ culture and 
• Discuss and evaluate major challenges for the future and the implications of further tourism development
• Consider existing and potential sustainable strategies to minimise the impacts and issues and provide and evaluate recommendations to reduce negative impacts and support the positive development of tourism

Assignment Guidelines

1. The essay will be word processed and demonstrate competence in English grammar and vocabulary and fluency in communication of business language, awareness of cultural differences between origin and destination regions and a degree of competence in a critical and investigative approach. The reference section of the written report will be in the Harvard format. Appropriate sources will be cited in the text.
2. Excellent students will make a reasoned discussion in a professionally written essay that leads the reader to a clear conclusion.
3. The use of the ideas of others without acknowledgement (plagiarism) will be dealt with in accordance with the University Regulations
4. The assignment will be around 4000 words and the word count should be stated at the end of the assignment.
