INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS AN ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE?
As name implies it handles wider variety of terrain with good manoeuvrability.
As defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a vehicle that travels on low-pressure tires, with a seat that is straddled by the operator, along with handlebars for steering control. As the name implies, it is designed to handle a wider variety of terrain than most other vehicles.
It is also known as Quad , Quad Bike , Three wheeler , Four Wheeler .
Quad Bike History:
First it has to be understood what a quad bike really is. In the first place it is referred to as a quad bike because it is in essence a motorcycle that has four wheels, hence the reference to quad. In many parts of the world, they are also referred to as all terrain vehicles or ATVs. It travels on especially low-pressured tires, to allow it to go over rough terrain, and the one driver straddles it like a motorcycle. It is of course, steered by handlebars as well.
Most countries, including the United States, Canada and Australia will not sanction it for being street legal. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) definition states that it is a one person operated bike, however there are some possible definition changes coming to include newer quad bikes that will be set up for two people to ride in tandem style. Also, even though it is still referred to as a quad, there are three wheel quads being made, and there are even some with six wheels. Mostly the six-wheeled ones are in essence used for agricultural uses. ATVs or quads were first available in the early 1970s.
Yamaha, Suzuki, Polaris, KTM, Kawasaki, Jinan Qinqqi, Honda, Bombardier Quad Bikes and Arctic Cat manufacture the greater majority of quad bikes. People enjoy riding these because of the resistance it offers to the abominable conditions of the terrain they are ridden on.
Quads came into being initially in Japan. Some of them had three wheels and some four, but their main use was to be able to navigate the rough terrain found in mountainous areas that were very isolated from their farms to the nearest town and back. The farmers had often complained that when spring thaw came as well as during the rainy seasons, the steep mountainous roads were customarily rendered impassable using conventional vehicles. The three-wheeled vehicles were the answer to those problems. Other motorized transport would bog down but never these three-wheeled wonders.
Eventually they became motorized transport that also doubled as recreational vehicles. Various Japanese manufacturers become conscious of the fact that Americans would love these if they were marketed in the United States.
Thus in the early 1970s they were promoted and marketed as recreational vehicles that could provide the rider incredible thrills. Even today quad bikes are being used for that selfsame reason. It was after that time that assorted sportsmen began to view this wonderful machine as a means of reaching some of the remote spots where one could fish and hunt in the solitude of areas that
heretofore had proven to be impassable with the use of conventional vehicles. In addition, the vehicles could be used to bring their game back from their chosen remote spots.
Finally these quad bikes also became vital tools in such widely differing fields such as police work, all types of agriculture, industry, ranching and farming. The disabled found them to be a critical means of mobility. Thus quad bikes accomplished work that no other vehicle could and are still being used that way today.
