Design for Development is a way that designers can make a contribution to communities in terms of both the obvious tangible benefits design can bring and at least one ‘flow-on’ effect. Write a short article. Use the knowledge gained from reading about your example and Polak’s chapter to explain the design or campaign and its contribution to communities.

Instructions

1. Research an example of Design for Development from the list below. Read critically and carefully.
2. Write a short article. Use the knowledge gained from reading about your example and Polak’s chapter to explain the design or campaign and its contribution to communities in terms of both the obvious tangible benefits and at least one ‘flow-on’ effect. Flow-on effects are benefits that are not necessarily planned or direct, but are real improvements to the lives of people who use these designs or learn from the campaigns.
3. Select a relevant quote from this week’s set reading by Paul Polak to support your argument.

4. Use the quote in support of your argument, it must not be a ‘floating quote’ but integrated within a paragraph. Use an APA in text reference to acknowledge the source of the quote. ie (Polak, 2007, p...). See Library for link to referencing styles.
5. Post an image. All images need to be numbered and have a caption explaining what the images is, and the source details (url) listed underneath each image. Again, we did this as an in-class exercise. Consider how good captions don’t describe what the reader can already see, but link the image to key ideas in the text. Also consider how captions encourage the audience to move from image to text by attracting their interest.
6. Edit carefully. While this is a very short piece of writing, it is all the more important that there are no errors in your English expression and spelling. Captions in academic writing must be complete sentences, not phrases. Use Grammarly or Grammarcheck and Spellcheck.
7. Include a Reference List of sources consulted. This also include the image sources. They all need to be in APA style and in alphabetical order.
