Description of the Research

This intervention was aimed to reduce obesity among children in United States, especially if one of their parents was obese, which applied to the children between 2-6 years. The study applied on children who have body mass index (BMI) in the 95th percentile or higher or 85th to less than 95th percentile with one overweight parent. The children with this range of BMI are considered as overweight (Poston et al., 2016). The study focused on overweight children to change their behavior and to decrease the risk factor especially for the children who have overweight parents. The intervention was aimed at bringing primary health care restructuring, by addressing the changes in the health care system and by improving community resources through training of health workers (Colquitt et al., 2016). The core purpose was to encourage behavioral change among children with an aim of reducing their BMI over the year.

In following study total of 3253 children were assessed in randomized trial and for the eligibility children were already visiting pediatric heath care centers. The pre-eligible randomized selection was from 10 different pediatric practices start from age 2- 6.9 with high or equal 85MBI to >/95MBI between August 2006 and October 2008 (Taveras et al., 2011). The pediatric centers have explained the purpose of study and gave instructions about the study to all families by email and telephone.  In the study, the researchers excluded the children whose parents could not speak English or Spanish in the interviews, children whose parent were not overweight, families who were planning to leave or disconnect their medical visit at the medical center, children with chronic medical conditions and the families who refused the intervention.
