  1. Adani is one of the largest Indian MNEs. It has established and operated an Australian subsidiary, Bravus Mining & Resources (https://www.bravusmining.com.au/carmichael-mine/), for its Carmichael coal mine in Queensland, Australia, which was approved by the Australian government in 2014 and has been operational since December 2021. However, its environmental impact has been a hot issue concerning many of its stakeholders.  Assume you were Stakeholder Manager of the company/subsidiary.  Using the knowledge and skills of stakeholder identification, classification and management covered in Module 9, you are required to: (1) identify the key stakeholders involved in this project; (2) map them into different groups based on their power and interest using the stakeholder mapping framework; and (3) develop appropriate strategies to manage different groups of these stakeholders identified and justify

Answer:

Key stakeholders: The key stakeholders of Bravus mining might include Australian government (Queensland), contractors, suppliers, employees, customers, shareholders/investors, non-profit organisations/NGO’s/charity organisations, trade associations, environment controlling authorities, and Indigenous communities.

Stakeholder mapping:

The stakeholder identification and salience model studied in module 9 depicts three basis to identify and assess stakeholders, including power, legitimacy and urgency (Huang, 2024). The stakeholders for Bravus mining & Resources with high power, high legitimacy and high interest includes the Australian Government (Queensland), the Indigenous communities due to their rights and ownerships of the land, the investors as they are financially involved in the project. These three main stakeholders holds the highest power, level of urgency and legitimacy due to their ability to impact the project majorly. A change in government regulations can stop the project if it does not align with the regulatory rules, denial by the indigenous communities to use the land for further mining can also diminish the whole project and a step back from financial investors can stop financial funds which can highly impact the project. Therefore they are the definitive (highly salient) stakeholders.

However, dominant stakeholders include the employees at Bravus and the shareholders. they have the legitimacy and power to influence business operations and outcomes. moreover, the non-profit organisations like NGO’s or charity organisations and environment controlling authorities are dependent and dangerous stakeholders due to their high level of urgency paired with low power of decision making on the business. In addition, the vendors, contractors, suppliers are the dormant stakeholders as they have some power to influence the business. Meanwhile, the trade associations are discretionary stakeholder having legitimacy and local communities are demanding stakeholders, having a level of urgency but no such power.
