The following assessment tasks use a simulated business called Angel Solutions Australia (ASA). In order to complete the assessment tasks, you will need to access information, templates, policies and procedures associated with ASA. The trainer/assessor will provide you with the same. ASA is a consultancy service providing assistance with compliance, finances, human resources, information technology and other business needs to ensure that businesses have the expertise and support they need to survive and prosper. You should familiarise yourself with what ASA does, its services and history, the organisational structure of the business, its employees, and its mission, vision and business objectives.
For this assessment you will play the role of Zane O’Brien, ASA Human Resources Consultant.
Part A – Assist development of Termination & Separation policies and procedures
Task Instructions:
In this task you are required to research about the features of best practice systems of separation and termination and the legal requirements and draft the following policies & procedures (using the ASA policy and procedure template) and documents, in line with provisions of relevant legislation & the best practices you have researched.
- Policy and procedure for immediate (summary) This should include:
- The applicable legislation &
- The process to be followed before and when issuing notice of immediate (summary)
- A template letter to be provided to employees advising of the immediate dismissal process/ investigation (you may wish to use the format of Letter of Offer template located on the ASA Business documents).
- Policy and procedure for staff redundancy/redeployment. This should include:
- The reference to applicable Legislation and Regulations
- Redundancy and redeployment consultation & planning process to be followed
- Requirements for redundancy payments and notice period (note no ASA employees are covered by an Award and all were employed after January 2010).
- Commitment to support employees either via redeployment or through outplacement.
- Policy and procedure for staff exit This should include:
- Employee rights with respect to participating in exit interviews
- Procedure to be followed when setting up and conducting exit interviews
- A description of how the information gathered during exit interviews will be used
- At least five standard questions to be incorporated into every exit interviews.
- A template/checklist to be used during exit interviews.
Email these drafts to Glenda William, HR Manager (role played by your trainer/ assessor) to seek feedback.
Part B – Obtain support & feedback (Role- play)
Task Instructions:
In this part of the task you are to meet with Glenda William, HR Manager (role to be played by your Assessor). You must address the following points during your discussion:
- Describe each of the policies and procedures developed and seek the manager & other team member’s feedback and advice in order to refine and finalise the
- Obtain support for the documents and permission to finalise them based on the feedback
- Discuss the skills and knowledge required by ASA staff in order to follow the summary dismissal Describe how you ensured policies and procedures comply with legislative requirements and organisational procedures.
You should take notes during your discussion as this information will be required to finalise the policy & procedures as well as the supporting documents.
The finalised policies & procedures as well as the supporting documents must be submitted after the role play.
Part C - Communicate policies and procedures, and provide supporting documents to relevant stakeholders
To begin this part, read the following email and then complete the tasks that follow.
Task Instructions:
In this task you are required to write an email to all staff (please use the Email Template, accessible via the ASA business documents folder) covering the following:
- Advising that the procedures and supporting documentation are attached for staff
- Summarising the process undertaken to develop these, ensuring they reflect industry best practice and regulatory
- Including at least two sources of information accessed when developing the policies, procedures or supporting documentation including the sources of legislative requirements.
- A brief description of actions to be taken to ensure that management personnel have the appropriate skills and knowledge to manage the disciplinary process, g. training, an implementation guide, coaching, etc. This should include:
- A description of the actions and how it will be delivered/provided.
- Points to be covered.
Submit the email draft to all staff covering all points as the assessment answer.
Part D – Coordinate & Plan for staff separation/ retirement
To begin this part, read the following email and then complete the tasks that follow.
Task Instructions:
- Calculate the anticipated retirement date of each staff member (assuming they retire on their 65th
birthday). Add this to the spreadsheet provided as attachment.
- Write a short report identifying any areas where ASA may be impacted as a result of a number of staff retiring in a short period. You should consider both individual departments, areas of cross functionality and senior
Part E – Coordinate Exit interviews
To begin this part, read the following email and then complete the tasks that follow.
- In this task you are required to write an email to Tracey White ([email protected]) including the given points:
- Inviting her to participate in an exit interview prior to her retirement.
- Explaining her rights with respect to participation in the interview.
- The format to be followed, where it will be held, questions to be asked,
- How ASA will manage her personal data and
- How the data collected will be used within the

- Update the exit interview data spreadsheet to include Tracey’s responses and
- Evaluate data as shown on the spreadsheet and identify any trends or patterns or areas for improvement within the ASA
