Heritage assets are a controvers ial subject. There is an ongoing debate about whether we should consider heritage items as assets from an accounting perspective. According to IPSASB, heritage items can be described as “items that are intended to be held indefinitely and preserved for the benefit of present and future generations because of their rarity and/or significance in relation, but not limited, to their archeological, architectural, agricultural, artistic, cultural, environmental, historical, natural, scientific or technological features” (IPSASB, 2017). Some examples of heritage items are historic buildings, national parks, monuments, and artefacts.

You as an accountant, based on your interpretation of the Accounting Standards and Conceptual Framework, discuss “should heritage items be recognised as assets in the balance sheet?”
