SILOs • Create a report on sustainable development goals in the hospitality sector

The purpose of this assessment task is to create a business report on a sustainable development goal in the hospitality sector to solve a real problem. This assessment will be developed and presented in three sections and explored further in class in weeks 10, 11, and 12, with a minimum of 1 hour dedicated to working on the report under lecturer guidance.

Section 1: Background

Students are to identify a sustainable issue in hospitality they wish to investigate. This can extend to the broader tourism sector if required. The main sustainability issues include hospitality environmental issues (detailed in week 10) and must be linked to one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the 17 topics, such as water, electricity, pollution, environment, or climate change.

Sub-section headings will include:

  • Describe the environmental issue you want to explore.

  • Why this issue is a problem for the hospitality industry?

  • State the Sustainable Development Goal to which you will link your environmental issue (e.g., sustainable electricity with SDG 7 Renewable Energy).

Section 2: Idea Generation

Students must discuss the ethical issues of their chosen topic and the impacts on a developing country (e.g., countries, regions, or towns in parts of Africa, South-east Asia, Pacific Nations, and parts of South America).

The sub-section headings will include:

  • Location you have chosen.

  • What is your idea? (e.g., putting solar panels on remote restaurant roofs).

Section 3: Resources Required

Students must discuss how this idea will be achieved.

  • What stakeholders will be involved? List all stakeholders required to implement your idea, such as government approval, manufacturing, volunteers, paid employees, and locals.

  • How will you fund your idea? Who will invest (e.g., Government, NGO, UN, Philanthropy)?

  • Estimated timeline from start to completion?
