Assessment 2: Detailed Individual Research Proposal

30% of total assessment

Assessment 2 will be based on the Research Question developed in Assessment 1, students will write a more refined Research Proposal. This can be both a development of and/or a departure from the themes/topics of Assessment 1 – that is, you can make your question more precise, and/or change it a bit based on the research you have done. It can it evolve to become a different question, based on reflection etc.
Importantly: consider how this research question might inform your career – i.e. you will benefit most from this Assessment, and this course, if this is not ‘simply’ an exercise, but research into something that you actually care about.

The proposal should contain the following components:

A summary/introduction, more or less similar to the Research Question from Assessment 1 in format. Identify the gap, discuss how the gap will be addressed and speculate on conclusions.
Method implies an investigation leading to some new form of knowledge, or bringing together data in a novel fashion.
A method/theoretical section: is there a framework that drives the research? i.e., Looking at flood damage from the perspective of indigenous knowledge of watersheds; looking at robotic construction through theories of artificial intelligence; considering infill housing according to discussions of density, climate, and the 15-minute city, etc. etc.
A narrative/outputs Consider how you will tell the story, and what you will produce – if this were to be a book, what is chapter 1? This is necessarily speculative, but an important opportunity to consider how the proposal will be read and understood, what is its audience, what sort of outputs might result.
A conclusion, returning to the summary to elaborate on the central argument, now supported by data, method, narrative and the prospect of impact.
