Unit #1: History & Foundations of Law Lesson: An Introduction to Human Rights Law What is Stereotyping? ➔Judging one person of a group and applying that judgement to all group members. ➔Stereotypes are most oftenoversimplifications. Example: ●if you witness a teenager stealing from a convenience store and conclude that all teenagers are thieves, this is stereotyping ●If you witness a female driver run a red light and assume all females are poor drivers, this is stereotyping What is Prejudice? ➔An opinion or judgement, especially an unfavourable one, based on irrelevant considerations or inadequate knowledge. ◆Occurs when individuals or groups are pre-judged based ona stereotype. ◆Prejudiced opinions are often based onignorance. Example: ●if a stereotype is that women are bad drivers you assume that a person is a bad driver because she is a women, then your attitude toward that woman is prejudice What is Discrimination? ➔Treating a person differently or unfavourably for no valid reason. ◆Discriminationresults when people base their actions on stereotyping and prejudice and treat others unfairly. Example: ●if a taxi company owner believes that all women are bad drivers (astereotype) and when a women applies for a job the owner assumes she must be a bad driver (aprejudice) and refuses to give her one, thendiscriminationaccuse ◆Although stereotyping and prejudice are not illegal, discrimination is! ◆Human rights legislation prohibits discrimination and helps protect society against it.
