Purpose
The analytical journals are designed to assess your understanding of concepts and themes from the readings, your capacity to apply them, and your comprehension of theories and arguments in cultural sociology. Completing the journals will aid your learning by developing key skills that you draw on in the final research essay.
Task Details
You will submit 2 Analytic Journals across the semester.
Drawing on set readings from Module 1 (Journal #1) and Modules 2 and 3 (Journal #2), you will respond to specific criteria detailed below. The journals are not simply a summary of a reading; each has a key task you must address. As the two journals have different requirements, expectations, and criteria, please ensure you read the instructions for both.
You can also find additional information about each journal at the bottom of the weekly block for the week the journal is due.
Important:
Use of AI is NOT PERMITTED for Analytic Journals
The Analytic Journals are designed to build knowledge and skills related to:
-
The application of key concepts in cultural sociology
-
The development of critical and comparative thinking in cultural sociology
The task requires you to read set texts and develop original ideas without the use of generative artificial intelligence applications.
Instructions
For each journal, you need to focus on concepts, arguments or theories from required readings of SOC3SOC and write a sociological analysis that responds to that journal's key task.
These are not personal journals; they should be written as short pieces of social analysis.
We look at culture sociologically in this subject, so you need to develop sociological perspectives on culture in your journals.
