Slide 1: Introduction

Good [morning/afternoon/evening], everyone. Today, we are addressing a critical issue that is shaping the future of work: employee resistance to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). As AI technology continues to evolve and integrate into various organizational processes, it is becoming increasingly mandatory for employees to adapt. Despite its potential to revolutionize productivity and efficiency, many employees are expressing resistance to AI. This resistance often stems from fears and concerns that we will explore in detail today. Our objective is to understand these issues and discuss how Human Resource Management (HRM) can address them effectively.

Slide 2: The Issue

Artificial intelligence, often referred to as automation technology, is capable of performing tasks that typically require human cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving and decision-making (Benbya et al., 2020). In recent years, organizations have increasingly adopted AI technologies to enhance operational efficiency and drive innovation. However, this transition has not been smooth for all employees.

Employees are subjected to use AI tools, and this has led to significant resistance in many workplaces. A primary concern driving this resistance is the fear of job loss. Many employees worry that AI will replace them, leading to potential unemployment. This fear is not unfounded, as automation has indeed altered job roles and, in some cases, led to job displacement.

Additionally, employees face several other issues related to AI adoption:

- Fear of Replacement: The anxiety of being replaced by AI systems creates stress and discomfort, impacting overall productivity and performance (Pereira et al., 2023).

- Skills Gap: Many employees feel unprepared for the new technology due to a lack of necessary skills, contributing to resistance against AI adoption (Chrisinger, 2019).

- Biased Recruitment: Concerns have been raised about AI algorithms leading to biased recruitment practices, which may disadvantage candidates from diverse backgrounds (Köchling & Wehner, 2020).

- Powerlessness and Limited Interaction: The integration of AI can create a sense of powerlessness among employees, reducing meaningful interactions with supervisors and colleagues (Kim & Bodie, 2020).

- Invasion of Privacy: The use of AI can lead to concerns about privacy invasion, which undermines employee trust and can lead to higher turnover intentions (Köchling et al., 2024).
