I will explore the significance of implementing self-care strategies in palliative care. Through this narrative digital story, I will focus on my personal experience highlighting exercise as an essential strategy for maintaining well-being, its benefits, and how it increases our capability to care for others."

“Self-care must be a fundamental part of nursing practice, specifically in palliative care, where there is a lot of emotional and physical labour. The self-care practice within the palliative care workforce is often overlooked. Nurses in palliative care nurses provide services to patients facing life-limiting illnesses. Thus, maintaining our mental and physical health is not only a necessity for us but for the quality of care, we provide to patients and their families. If we neglect our own needs, we risk burnout, compassion fatigue, and emotional exhaustion, which can inhibit our ability to provide empathetic care to patients. To avoid this practice self-care strategies which include maintaining good nutrition and good sleep habits, avoiding smoking or alcohol consumption, socializing, and walking in nature to take care of oneself as a primary component to preventing burnout (Mills et al., 2018)”.

" Self-care is defined as an ability to prevent disease, promote and maintain health, and cope with disability and illness. This can be done with or without the support of health care workers. In the case of nurses, self-care refers to actions meant to reduce stress and be mindful of one's own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs (Williams et al., 2021)."
