Stereotypes are most oftenoversimplifications. Example: if you witness a teenager stealing from a convenience store and conclude that all teenagers are thieves, this is stereotyping If you witness a female driver run a red light and assume all females are poor drivers, this is stereotyping What is Prejudice? An opinion or judgement, especially an unfavourable one, based on irrelevant considerations or inadequate knowledge. Occurs when individuals or groups are pre-judged based ona stereotype. Prejudiced opinions are often based onignorance. Example: if a stereotype is that women are bad drivers you assume that a person is a bad driver because she is a women, then your attitude toward that woman is prejudice What is Discrimination? Treating a person differently or unfavourably for no valid reason. Discriminationresults when people base their actions on stereotyping and prejudice and treat others unfairly.
