Characterize businesses that you have previously worked for or currently work for as centralized or decentralized, more vertical (taller) or flatter. How did you make this determination? What impact would this have on the three types of company responsibility centers? During my time in the timber industry, I worked for a business that had a very dispersed organizational structure. This is since the structure of the firm was constructed and regulated in such a way that lower managers were given the authority to make the choices that were essential for the success of the company. The sole responsibility of the general manager, who reported directly to the owner and served in a subordinate capacity, was to disseminate information on changes to the production schedule. Because of this, the Department Managers were given the responsibility of deciding which items should be produced and in what sequence those products should be produced. Because of this, the structure took on a flatter, more simplified form (Weygant, J. J., Kimmel, P. D., & Mitchell, J. E. 2020). It was a streamlined corporate structure, in which the majority of the workers were on the same level as others even if their tasks were extremely distinct from one another. The delivery driver was required to account for his actions not only to the supervisors of the several departments but also to the individuals operating the forklifts. The majority of the lift drivers working in the Cut Department were other workers of the department as well as the department's head. At any one moment, this department had a total of five people, including the lead and the Cut Department Manager, who were qualified to operate the forklift that was exclusive to this department. This was owing to the fact that the work that these workers did was the most hazardous and strenuous in terms of physical requirements, and there was also the possibility that an employee might be absent due to chiropractic or other medical appointments. If you were to structure your own company, would it be centralized or decentralized, taller or flatter, and why? What are the benefits or drawbacks to the type of business you would own? Explain whether you would use flexible or static budgeting or not. Why or why not? If I were to start my own business, it would not have a centralized leadership structure and instead have a flatter organizational structure. As the owner and chief executive officer of the company, I believe there should be only one more person on staff who is accountable for all the other workers. On the other hand, this individual would not have the authority to recruit or fire people who reported to them or below. Because of this, the duty would rest solely on my shoulders, which has the added benefit of preventing others in the firm from becoming power- hungry or allowing their positions to make them arrogant. Because I have an excess of goods on hand, it is imperative that I create a budget that is adaptable, as there is a possibility that I may not need some products. This will assist to avoid an excessive amount of expenses for the company and guarantee that products are cycled into use in the appropriate manner before more recent things are used.
