Assessment Task 1 - Written Assignment
Instructions
You must complete this assessment task on your own, and are not to work in groups. It must be your own work.
The intent of this assessment task is to demonstrate the application of structural principles to residential construction. Your trainer/assessor will guide you through the process to complete this assessment task.
Assessment Directions
For these assessments you will need to refer to the domestic plans and specifications from unit CPCCBC4012 (if you have not undertaken CPCCBC4012 your trainer/assessor will provide you with a copy of these documents).
Question 1
Refer to the plans you have been provided with and nominate which contract would be the best one to use for this project.
Question 2
Refer to the construction specification supplied to you and list two (2) examples of relevant standards.
Question 3
List two (2) workplace safety requirements under the OH&S Act that would be required during the house’s construction. Refer to WorkSafe Victoria website.
Question 4
Describe the planning and construction methods and the structural aspects for each of the following construction stages (concerns to load) using the plans provided to you as attachment to Unit 4012.
Your description of each stage should include at least one reference to the relevant section in the NCC and include a diagram.
- Site preparation
- Concrete footings/slab system
- Timber wall and roof framing system
- Masonry walls
- Roof cladding & rainwater distribution system

Referring to the NCC, Volume 2, list an applicable Australian standard to the five (5) areas of construction. Prepare in specification format.

Using the floor plan shown below, draw a section view through one external wall at the part indicated by the red line.

Referring to plans provided to you, discuss in order, the type of industry professionals that must be consulted, and what specific information they would supply regarding design and structural integrity for this building. List four (4).

You are required to provide a satisfactory response to each question below to complete this assessment.

What is the difference between a simply supported beam and a continuous beam?

- What is the function of a cantilever member? Base your answer on its relationship to load path.
- A cantilevered balcony on a house project is 1500mm out from the extended wall. Based on your answer to (1) above, what is the total length of the supporting beams?

SECTION C: PERFORMANCE ACTIVITY
Assessment Task 3 – Major Project
- For this assessment, you will be required to analyse, review and interpret drawings from one building project – commercial (Trainer can provide set of drawings if student requires). You will be required to answer a number of questions.
- Describe the name of the project, address, building class, the number of storeys, details of the site (grade, geotechnical details) the current stage of construction, and any external forces the structure needs to be able to withstand,
- Describe the base structure (i.e., concrete stumps, brick piers slab on ground, suspended slab, waffle pod slab etc.),
- Describe the structural system used for the walls: (i.e., Timber or steel framed, brick veneer, solid masonry etc.),
- Describe the roof design, structure, and roofing material (flat or pitched, timber or steel framed, metal sheet or tile roof),
- Provide the name and number of two (2) Australian Standards applicable to the structure for the project,
- Name two (2) sections in the NCC that are applicable to the structure for the project,
- Name five (5) examples of structural members or components in the project, describe the forces acting on the component and provide a diagram showing the load path in each component,
- Provide five (5) examples of safety measures by the Builder in relation to construction of the structural members/components.
