The objective of the study was to investigate the attitudes of individuals towards abortion. While the results demonstrate that abortion rates are increasing. The participants of the data were primarily women, between the ages 15 to 19, 20-24 and above. 67% of the women stated that they were never married and 16% of the women were either widowed, divorced or separated. The remaining percentage of women fell into married category. The highest rate of abortion was found out among young women. The cause of this trend is because of legalization of abortion, the rise of pro-choice movement, and the women’s rights to equality.

The findings suggest that a variety of determinants are responsible for increasing this trend. While women in developed countries are aware of their legal and sexual rights, they are vulnerable. Marital status, age, and socio-economic status are reasons for high abortion rates among women. All of these determinants overlap with one another. Economic dependencies and poverty are responsible for high abortion rates. Pregnancies are frequently terminated by women, who have are living below the poverty line and are unmarried. Since these women do not have financial means to support their children, they resort to abortion.   According to Chai et al (2017), perspectives on abortion are influenced by marital status and socio-economic background. They also reported that social class is responsible for influencing decision pertaining to abortion.  ---- suggests that women go for abortion because of financial difficulties, lack of partner, and because of the inability to support a child financially and emotionally.

Marriage is a crucial indicator for influencing a woman’s perception towards abortion as compared to women that are single, widowed or divorced.  Based on the findings of this research, it has been suggested that marital status plays a vital role in influencing the decision of the women to abort or not to abort the foetus. The results demonstrates that the majority of the women that are going for abortions are unmarried, single, separated, widowed or divorced women. On the other hand, they indicate that married women are least likely to go for abortion. These findings suggest that marital status is an important indicator for going through abortion. 0000 asserts that unmarried women are under financial restrictions as compared to their married counterparts. Marriages offers both financial stability and partner availability. Both are considered to be essential determinants required for raising children in stable households. The availability of partner also alleviates the problem of providing both financial and emotional stability to the child. Furthermore, married households have sufficient resources that makes it easy for women to raise their children. As a result, married women are least likely to have abortion.

Age has been identified as a factor that is known to influence women’s perception regarding abortion as indicated in the results. Young women are more open to abortion as opposed to older women. Abortion among women between the ages 15 to 19 was determined to be 19%. For women between the ages 20 to 24, abortion rate was found to be 33%. The results are consistent with the results of previous studies. While Jones & Jerman (2017) have reported that abortion rates have declined among women between the ages 15 to 45 by 14% from 2011 to 2014, their study revealed that younger women have a strong inclination towards abortion in order to terminate unintended pregnancy. Similarly, Chai et al (2017), Hognert et al (2017) and Laanpere et al (2014) have all reported that abortion rates are higher among young woman.

The prevalence of higher abortion rates among young women could possibly because of legalization of abortion and the pro-choice movement.

The results of this study shows that the social class is responsible for influencing the participant perspective on abortion. Jones & Jerman (2017) have reported that abortion is common among women that come from low socio-economic backgrounds. They have reported that 49% of the abortion patients lived below the poverty line. Previously, abortion rates among low-income patients was estimated to be 42% in 2008. Abortion rates are higher among young women, who are living below the poverty line.  A similar conclusion has been reached by Chai et al (2017). Their focused on conducting a study on identifying the reasons why women go for abortion in fourteen countries. The results of their study revealed that women are most likely to abort the child because of “socio-economic concerns or limiting childbearing”. Their study revealed that abortion was common among young, unmarried women. The reason for this is that these women felt that they were unable to financially support the child. A similar conclusion has reached by Ples et al (2019) and Loi et al (2018).

Another variable considered in the study was gender. Abortion is known to affect women physically, mentally, and emotionally. While men cannot directly related to abortion experience, political perspectives are known to have significant impact on men’s view on abortion. For instance, Republicans are pro-life, whereas Democrats are supporters of pro-choice. Both religious and political factors overlap in terms of abortion. Abortion is considered to be a major sin in major religion such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. since it is equivalent of murder. The pro-life argument stems out from this argument. On the other hand, pro-choice is derived from feminism. Feminism supports the notion that women have bodily, sexual and reproductive rights. Therefore, the right to abort is completely the choice of women.
