In the first reflective journal, students are required to reflect upon their changing understanding of how change happens. They should consider the exercise they performed in seminar one and should interact with the required and recommended readings from at least one week. In the second reflective journal, students are required to consider one of the institutions of change described in section two of the course. They should consider how (and if) they believe this institution can be involved in social change and briefly consider criticisms of development projects that have engaged with it. In both their reflective exercises should think about which readings, lectures and class discussions they agree with, disagree with and how these have shaped their understanding of social change.
A reflective journal as an assessment encourages deeper quality of learning. It allows students to monitor their reflective thinking over the course of the subject, and critically explore a theme, discussion, or lecture in the style of journal writing.
