Families will have varying levels of capacity and resources to support their child. One of the roles of a paediatric nurse is to provide support to parents and caregivers caring for children with complex medical needs in the home environment.

A child may have complex needs from birth or in some instances, the need may present after an illness or perhaps an injury.

This assessment requires you to consider the impact of caring for a child with complex medical needs and the additional support parents and family members may require on a daily basis.

Referring to the social determinants of health, discuss the impact caring for a child with complex medical needs has on parents, family members, and the role of the paediatric nurse in supporting families.

Chose only one of the following complex medical needs to include in your discussion:

  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Acquired brain injury Include in your discussion:
