SECTION A

Question 1 (40 marks) COMPULSORY

1.  (word count: 550)

Successful Brothers (SB) is a small size software development house that has been developing software applications for the last ten years using a use-case driven approach but not within the context of a well-documented and applied software development process. The tasks of configuration and quality management are taken ad-hoc and not within a process-centred approach. SB has now decided to expand its business exposure to include medium to large scale software development projects. Suggest six key software project and quality management initiatives that SB should implement in order to be able to make the shift from a small size to medium/large size software development house.

(40 marks)

SECTION B

Answer TWO QUESTIONS ONLY

  1. (no word count)

SB is software house that has recently joined the business of developing bioinformatics software application for OncoCare, a designated specialist cancer care hospital. SB follows an agile approach for software development that they have adopted recently with tooling support. OncoCare physicians and biotechnologists are the major clients and end users whose input and guidance are critical for the success of the delivery of OncoBio, the anticipated bioinformatics product. Both SB software engineers and OncoCare staff have been working together for few weeks with the software architecture of OncoBio designed by SB and presented to the concerned OncoCare. SB software engineers will have to implement advanced methods for data mining of OncoCare patients’ genetic information but linked with OncoCare’s hospital patient management system.

OncoCare requires the development of a data mining and machine learning engine using readymade algorithms estimated to account for 4,000 lines of code, which represents almost 200% of the new code to be written for the new features of OncoBio. Changes to the existing APIs interfacing OncoBio to OncoCare’s patient management system are not expected to consume more than 50% of OncoBio total lines of code for the development of new features.

Estimate the effort required to develop OncoCare using related COCOMO II model(s). Explain the implications of using the effort adjustment factors compared to without using these factors, on the accuracy of the calculated “total effort estimated” to complete the development of OncoBio.

Please see the below COMOMO II supplement regarding COCOMO II formula and tables.

Supplementary Formula and Data Tables for the COCOMO II Models:

Application Composition Model:

PM = (NAP x (1 - %reuse/100)) / PROD

Effort = A x Sizex M

The Re-use Model:

PMauto = (ASLOC x AT/100) / ATPROD ESLOC = ASLOC x AAM

ESLOC with some code adaptation = ASLOC x (1-AT/100) x AAM

The post-architecture model:

Effort = A x Sizex M

The A Constant for Different Software Project Types:

Organic (eg very familiar to the organisation) 3.2
Semi-detached 3.0
Embedded or Novel 2.8

3.  (word count: 500 words)

In the context of software configuration management, answer the following questions:

  • Identify the primary concern of software configuration management from the very early phase of the software development process. Discuss implications of this concern, using examples, in relation to the generic activities involved in the software development

(6 marks)

  • Identify what needs to be performed from a project management perspective in order to fulfill the objectives implied by the primary concern in (a).

(12 marks)

  • In one software development project, team members were allocated independent and concurrent components to develop for the anticipated final It was at the system integration stage that system components were first integrated. However, when testing started, bugs began to appear and fixing of new bugs started to make more bugs to appear which slowed down team performance and caused poor management of the bugs fixing process. Suggest three key recommendations that the project manager should implement immediately to alleviate this problem.

  1. (word count: 500 words)

ABC is a medium-size software company that has deployed a plan-driven process management approach with the aim to deliver software products within the required time scales and budget, and with high quality. As an ABC project manager and in coordination with their software quality manager, you have been exercising your role in terms of project monitoring and collected the following Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). You have observed that only 80% of the actors (or role takers) in the software development process (with activities from requirements engineering to testing and deployment), followed the defined software development process, 22% of process deliverables were rejected in the last three months (and subsequently corrective re-work was needed) and that the average lead time per software activity deliverable was 12 working days.

  • Reflect on the implications of each of the measured KPIs and whether each KPI is enough on its own to inform ABC project management for the need of process

(18 marks)

  • As a project manager, ABC management expects you to provide recommendations on what should be implemented based on these measurements or KPIs. Propose five concrete actions to improve the situation; and provide further analysis it to justify each proposed
