The impact of Globalization on Religion and Language
ABSTRACT
Globalization is not something that happened overnight but it took years to make its impact on the minds of people. The exchange of goods and services, the development of one society with the help of another society is all part of globalization. Where it has benefitted the societies in various ways it has impacted the religions and languages of different societies, mainly affecting the youngsters of that society, in which technology has played a big role.
The overall terminology of globalization, modernization and secularization has its own advantages and disadvantages. Globalization in the sense of cultures and religion is just another piece of fancy jargon. Globalization is seen everywhere. The development of “globalization,” can be referred to the big-picture process that involves the process of drawing products, services, and markets around the world closer together. Technology and media are playing their roles in bringing the world markets closer. Globalization is not something that happened over night, but it’s a process that has been going on for a long time. In trying to understand Cultural Globalization it is important that one understand how cultural globalization works and affects the communities. This essay will examine how the globalization impact on languages and religions.
Cultural globalization has a deep impact on languages and religions of many societies from the beginning; this could be mainly because of the fact that countries like Saudi Arabia and America do need to have business relations with each other Feigenbaum. H, (2011). The other reason could be because of the fact that many people from Saudi Arabia need to learn new technological advancements from American society and this could only be possible by visiting them, resulting in the adaption of their language. Though cultural globalization has removed the barrier of technology and communication between both the countries their religion is still different (Vesajoki, 2002). According to some sociologist it has been argued that today’s generation has benefited in many ways as compared to previous generations. One of the main reason for such benefits is due to globalized and technological society, one particular example that can be considered is that many wester universities are entering in middle eastern countries so that they can target a large market, though this process is helping the locals to familiarize themselves with the western culture (Tical, S, 2005).
From the beginning America has tended to dominant the global markets for the language they speak as it is generally considered as the most common language around the world. Whereas despite doing business internationally people from Saudi Arabia still prefer to communicate in their own Arabic language. According to Morrow. J, 2007 considering the Islamic society specially a country like Saudi Arabia, both their language and religion are generally considered an inseparable parts of Arab identity However due to globalization and technological advancements it has led to a dramatic loss of cultural values within the Islamic society, many youngsters believe that they have to constantly stay updated with various social platforms like Facebook, twitter and so on in order to stay connected with the western world (Soros. G, 1998). The Arabic language is undergoing a reduction in the use of Islamic expressions as they are more supplanted by simplified forms based on English language. However considering the case of America, there is no single religion but a combination of various religions, which can be categorized under the term as Americanization. According to Feigenbaum, (2011) Americanization is the contrary of cultural diversity, which is valuable to everyone.
Globalization is a series of powerful processes that consist of both, opportunities and threats. Many non-western countries like Saudi Arabia consider that globalization is affecting their cultural imperialism, mostly affecting their teenagers and indirectly convincing them to adapt norms and values of western culture. Though globalization has been able to invade local cultures, languages and lifestyles, still it has helped societies in many other ways. If this trend continues in the future, both countries might lose their single identity that will challenge globalization, for example people in Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia will no longer be able to control their lives. Cultural globalization has more advantages than disadvantages and it wont be wrong to say that the future for both countries is very much uncertain, English language is definitely more dominant over the Arabic language but the religion of Saudi is not affected at all.
