Assessment Details
In this unit, you will be required to undertake a written reflection on how your own race and culture and your experience (racism, cultural biases, white privilege, etc.) has impacted upon your life to date. Compare and contrast that to what your image would be to the experience of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person In Australia. If you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait islander person compare and contrast to a non-Indigenous person in Australia.
Students should use the following framework to prepare their reflection:
- Critical self-reflection and awareness in Identifying own cultural biases
- Critical awareness of racism within today's society
- Ability to incorporate AASW social work values and principles

- Demonstrates self-reflection in relation to your own cultural blases
- Demonstrates the capacity to critically reflect on racism within the context of Australian society
- Demonstrates capacity to critically reflect on systemic and structural issues related to racism and cultural biases
- Shows capacity to articulate key issues and concepts
How to do well In Assessment 1
- As you work through the online sessions and exercises consider how your own cultural biases impact upon your thinking about Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people and issues
- Consider your own reactions to the course content and reflect upon how your own cultural biases and perceptions are being shaped by the course
- Use the library databases to begin searching for relevant articles, books and book chapters relating to Racism in Australia (focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people), cultural bias and self-reflection
