ASSIGNMENT 1: Report Introduction and Motivation
1. Pick a country and find data:
Data set is well known and commonly used in academic work and/or by international organisations. Student has cited studies that have used it (2 marks)
2. Explain how open this country is using an accepted measure of openness:
- Openness is well defined as per the lecture notes or other relevant information. The data is then used to show how open this country is. The student uses some sort of benchmark to discuss openness. The benchmark could be other countries or regions.
- Use 2 graphs (one for each country), plot openness versus time for each country. Explain how openness has changed for these countries over the last 10 years. Make sure your graph is properly labelled (10 marks)
3. Discuss the country’s major exports, trade policy and sources of comparative advantage:
- The student has indicated what the country's major exports are. The student has also given an account of the country's trade policy, talking about what major impediments it has to trade in terms of tariffs and non-tariff barriers. The student has also defined comparative advantage and discussed it in terms of the country.
- When defining concepts and discussing policies, use Google scholar to see what experts have said about the country. Cited their work (8 marks)
