Your task is to create a reflective journal using a portfolio. Students are asked to keep a journal about their current financial knowledge and experience in learning financial literacy. It is expected that weekly entries will be made and these can take various forms. At the end of the trimester students will be asked to formulate a report from their weekly entries. This will involve evaluating and describing your own learning experience in this assessment. This is known as reflective practice. We recommend you start your learning about reflective practice by reviewing a presentation titled, “Getting started with reflective practice”. You can also access a written document here that highlights a basic introduction of reflective practice with examples to help you get started or to continue on with your reflective writing journey [Note: Prepared by The Learning Centre and reproduced in original format, The University of New South Wales, 2010].
What is a portfolio?
In its simplest form, Portfolios may be defined as a collection of evidence about what and how you have learnt, including personal reflections on your learning and how it might relate to other studies or your future career path.
Graduate employers consistently tell us that they are looking for graduates who display not only technical skills but also those referred to as non-technical or employability skills. These include communication, self-management, and the ability to work in team and to learn from mistakes.
Portfolios act as a record of your individual learning and perhaps more importantly your progress in learning. It assists you when preparing for graduate employment interviews or jobs while you are studying.
What is reflective practice?
Reflective practice is about taking personal responsibility for actions, self-reflecting and critiquing your own performance and identifying and planning future development needs. In order to take personal responsibility for your actions you need to keep evidence of this as you work on this assessment. This could be in the form of journal entries, images or audio content. By having this evidence you will be able to reflect back on it and critique your own performance. Once you have read some of the resources about reflective practice the next stage is deciding what to write down.

What is Self-management?
In this unit, Self-Management refers to skills and strategies by which individuals can effectively identify and action learning opportunities and self-improvements to direct their own learning activities toward the achievement of personal and professional learning goals. Self-management skills include:
- setting a future plan and establishing clear personal goals
- reviewing and monitoring one’s own performance
- taking responsibility for own learning
- setting priorities and milestones
- clearly articulating personal ideas and vision.
What should I write about?
The reflection could address a number of questions such as:
- What is my current knowledge of financial literacy?
- What are my thoughts on my ability to complete the major assignment?
- Do I independently research a topic in detail? Should I do this but can’t be bothered?
- How am I going to approach the assessment?
- What are my strengths and weaknesses and how can I use them in this unit?
- What would I like to achieve in MAA104? Where should I focus my efforts and why?
- What are my thoughts on where this assessment will assist my future career?
- Do I engage in discussion about the assessment for the workbook exercises and collaborate with other students during class time?
- Do you conduct yourself in a professional manner? Are you on time to class, do you prepare before class such as reading the text and notes?
- What have I achieved towards the Course Learning Outcome that will be assessed as part of this journal?
- What have I previously learnt from another situation and how can it be applied here? Eg: left an assignment to the last minute and got sick and could not finish it by the due date.
- Are you able to review prior learning (past experiences inside and outside the classroom) in depth, to be able to reveal fully clarified meanings or indicating broader perspectives about educational or life events?
- Has your thinking changed since starting this unit? If so how?
- What have you found inspiring, confusing, difficult, interesting and why?
- Questions you have and conclusions you have drawn.
These are suggestions only.
You will be provided with resources to assist. Often students can find reflective writing challenging and are unsure of how to do this and why it is important. Before attempting this section it is recommended that you review the resources available.
In what format should I produce these weekly entries?
The weekly entries can be produced in a range of formats. You can use a combination of formats or just one. It is whatever suits you and you feel comfortable using. Remember you will need to be able to access them later in the trimester. These are some suggestions that you might like to select from when creating your weekly journal:
- you could make a video,
- record your thoughts using audio,
- use an exercise book,
You are also welcome to include anything else you wish to remember in your journal. This can be in a number of formats such as a newspaper article, text, pictures, videos (downloaded or created by you) or any other item (artefact) you want. Artefacts can be anything you think displays your work/ideas/thoughts and ultimately your learning! Some examples include: assignment work (business plan, marketing poster, spreadsheet, drawing).
Once you create a weekly entry you store this artefact electronically and you can also attach anything you feel supports this entry. Use whatever platform (oneDrive, GoogleDrive, Blogger, Dropbox, WordPress- the platform is irrelevant) you are comfortable with, to collect your weekly entries and supporting attachments (known as evidence or artefacts).
How long should each entry be?
At a minimum it is recommended you write 100 words per entry. This may vary as some students may wish to make more than one entry per week. There is no maximum amount, you are free to write as much as you wish to. Keep in mind you will need put together a summary of your entries for submission in week 11 that will be approximately 1000 words.

Your task is to develop a Portfolio that highlights your thoughts and self reflections about
this unit.
There are three steps in the task:
Step 1:
Write down your initial thoughts about the unit and how you think you will go. Determine at least two goals that you wish to achieve while studying this unit. The two goals should be focused on developing Self-management skills. When setting your goals consider stating them as SMART goals. To set a SMART goal make sure it is:
Specific – Consider who, what, when, where, why and how in developing the goal.
Measurable – Include a numeric or descriptive measurement.
Achievable – Consider the resources needed and set a realistic goal.
Relevant – Make sure the goal is consistent with the mission.
Time-bound – Set a realistic deadline.
