Gibbs Reflective Cycle
“‘It is not sufficient simply to have an experience in order to learn. Without reflecting upon this experience it may quickly be forgotten, or its learning potential lost. It is from the feelings and thoughts emerging from this reflection that generalizations or concepts can be generated, and it is generalizations that allow new situations to be tackled effectively.’ (Gibbs 1988)”
Graham Gibbs created his reflective cycle in his 1988 book “Learn by Doing” to support experiential learning. It offers a structured way of examining experiences, particularly those that you experience regularly, allowing you to learn and plan from what went well and what did not.
Explanation of Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Gibbs models include six stages as shown in the figure below. Through this model, you can analyze and explore the situation. For each of the six stages of the model, we have outlined a number of questions outlined below to help you understand it more clearly.
Description
In this stage, you have the chance to describe the situation in detail. The major thing to add here is what happened.
- What happened?
- Where and when did it happen?
- What did you do? Who was present?
- Why were you there?
- What was the outcome of the situation?
Feeling
In this stage, you explore the feelings and thoughts that you had about the situation.
- What were you thinking during and after the situation?
- What were you feeling during and after the situation?
- What do you think other people present there to think about the situation?
Evaluation
In this stage, you evaluate what worked and what didn’t in the situation. Try to focus on both the positive and negative things about the situation here.
- What went well? What didn’t?
- What was good or bad about the situation?
- Was your contribution positive or negative?
Analysis
In this stage, you try to make sense of the situation by using theory and wider context to develop understanding.
- Why did things go well or badly?
- How can the theory help in understanding the situation?
- How does my experience relate to literature?
- What research/theories can help me to make sense of this?
- What would have happened if you had reacted differently?
Conclusion
In this stage, you summarize everything and highlight what changes in your actions or others could have improved the situation.
- What did I learn from the situation?
- What are the things that could be used to improve the situation?
Action Plan
In this stage, you basically learn from the experience, and how you could improve for the next time.
- How and where can you use the new knowledge?
- If it happens again, what would you do differently?
- How will you adapt your actions or improve your skills?
Advantages and Disadvantages of the Gibbs Model

Aims of Using Gibbs Reflective Model
It aims to challenge the assumptions
It aims to explore new ideas and thought
It aims to promote the concept of self-improvement
It aims to connect practice and theory
Reflective Assignment Structure
Gibbs Reflective Model does offer the 6 stages to analyze the situation and in which each stage informs the next one. However, if you have noticed above, some stages have the same questions, which makes the assignment repetitive. This can make it confusing and hard to understand. When using the reflective model we will only be using analytical writing in only the “Analysis” stage. The other remaining stages will come under the statement of description. Gibbs Reflective Model’s Analysis
A reflective assignment will follow the classic format of Introduction, body and conclusion.
