Genetically Modified Food Review Assignment Help
BACKGROUND:
Kaur and Kohli et al. (2012, pp. 623-640) have come up with different angel on this topic and argued whether genetically Modified Food has any value or not and here more importance is given to the impact of GE applications in normal human’s life. Although there are many techniques in which genetic engineering is been used and has great ability to modify life but who are the beneficiaries of this scientific advancement is a big question and remains unanswered.
Healthy Eating – SF Gate (2011) discusses that growers produce Genetically Modified or genetically engineered foods for different reasons, the most important of all are:
- To improve their crop yield
- Improve the appearance of the food they grow
- Increase and improve living life of food.
Shetterly (2012, pp. 2-4) discusses that modified ingredients like corns and soy in cereals, different soft drinks and snacks are normally produced with genetically modified techniques and during the process of modified engineering, genes from plants, animals and microorganisms which are used in the food are altered by adding or deleting the required genes with particular qualities and then transferred from one specie to another and from one generation to another.
Godfrey, J. (2000) explains that this technology started off in 1970’s when a research base for genetic engineering was established in American Universities. Controversies over genetic engineering hence started off in those times and the scientist had to face great public interference. General public had great concerns related to this new advancement in the field of science and therefore to fight with public confrontation, the first generation of scientist published proper guidelines to be followed to avoid any kind of danger through Modified Engineering to human, animals or plants and on society as whole. The scientists were conscious enough to abide by the discipline set by them to avoid any trouble.
WHY IS GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD BAD:
MD (2012) provides the definition, that genetically modified organisms (“GMO”) or food are created when gene of one specie is transferred to another one which results in something that cannot be found in nature hence GMO is harmful for society as a whole. There are many reasons for which the GMO are bad for any human being, society and community as a whole.
- CONSEQUENCES ON HEALTH:
Mount (2012, pp. 15-18) explains that the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) are strictly instructed all the doctors to only prescribe non GMO food diet to all its patients. The doctors have narrated many incidents of organ damage, immune system disorder speeding aging and infertility been prime problems. Moreover, different studies show that if GMO induced diseases are controlled in the initial stage; there are 81% chances that the problem re-occurs in the long run and with worst results. Further to this, the studies also show that the gene which is transferred into genetically modified soy has the ability to reside in the human body and commonly negatively impact pregnant woman and the babies which are born.
Cook, G.(2004) explains that many health problems started after the introduction of genetically modified food in 1996. Talking about American populations, around 7% to 13% of the whole population has suffered from different problems including reproductive disorders, digestive problems etc. although there is no sufficient research to confirm is GMO are the only contribution factor, but doctor groups are non stop working on the impact of GMO and their impact on human life
- UNLABELED GMO FOOD:
Godfrey, J. (2000) discusses that in many countries till date including the United States of America don’t label genetically modified food and hence main problem arises. Customer purchases the canes unknowingly and hence faces problems. Many countries including, Australia, Japan and UK have put ban on all GMO products due to health issues.
- REDUCTION IN GENETIC DIVERSITY:
Hart. G (2007) explains that more diversification in the gene means more prompt and robust breed that is the reason that an old matt dog faces lesser problems and illness then the bred dogs which are hybrids. Plants from breeding system face more problems and hence lesser life span. Natural products, plants and animals have their own immunity system and hence handle any calamity while genetically modified products face problems and due to incapability to adaptation have less life span.
- IRREVERSIBLE PROCESS:
Mount (2012, pp. 18-20) discusses in his report that genetically modified organism contaminate the existing seed with their altered traits and pass on these traits to those species which were not the actually target giving birth to new specie or gene which was not targeted in the laboratory. Studies in the New Dakota laboratories reveal that around 80% of the wild canola which was tested has at least one transgenes. Even in Japan, a bacteria’s have been found with unnatural amino acid which is used in protein drink. the protein drink did major damage before it was recalls which ended the story of GMO in Japan.
- GMO AND GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY:
Another case in Hart. G (2007) discusses that genetically engineered which was proved to be increasing the yield of the crops has been proven wrong. Genetically engineering crops show no increase in the yield and the use of pesticide remains the same. The study show that other natural and precautionary way of cultivating has proven to be a better option as it not only reduced the use of pesticide but also increased the yield of thje crop and hence a healthy food for all.
- GENETICALLY ENGINEERING FOOD IMPACT ON ANIMALS:
MD (2012) revealed few studies which show that use of genetically modified food is bad for animals too. A rate using genetically engineering potatoes shows signs of problems in digestive systems and chronic wasting while the female rats using the same potatoes and herbicide resistant soybeans gave birth to abnormal pups.
- USE OF MASSIVE AMOUNT OF PESTICIDE AND HERBICIDES
Kaur and Kohli et al. (2012, pp. 627-635) describes Pesticide, herbicide ad fungicides being the most poisonous elements which they remain on the food we eat. As genetically modified food do not have natural immunity system hence more usage of these poisonous elements and therefore more unhealthy food. These hazardous products should be eaten or even allowed to enter into the water supply but it has become an ever day process hence endangering environment and children’s future
- IMPRECISE TECHNOLOGY:
MD (2012) elaborates the mechanism of stamping and says that genetic engineer transfers genes from one place to another or from one organism to another. Although the gene can be cut from any part precisely from the DNA of an organism, but the insertion process is not clear and hence the placement of the target DNA on the other organism is basically random. As a result, the risk to the life of the other organism is obvious and there is high possibility that the other organism its life due to wrong placement of the DNA.
