Assessment Task 1 - Critically relating methodology and materials to context and purpose
Description of Task:
Read:
Tomlinson, B. (2010). Principles of effective materials development. In N. Harwood (Ed.), English language teaching materials: Theory and practice. (pp. 81-108). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. and
Guerrettaz, A. & Johnston, B. (2013). Materials in the classroom ecology. The Modern Language Journal, 97(3), 779-796. doi: 10.1111/j.1540-4781.2013.12027.x
These are both available via the Library Reading List for this subject.
Consider Guerrettaz & Johnston’s (2013) analysis of their four elements of classroom ecology: participants, processes, structures and artifacts in relation to Tomlinson’s (2010) ten proposed principles for materials development (principles of language acquisition and language teaching).
1) Create a 10-slide PowerPoint that
(a) summarises what you think is important about the relationship between these two articles and
(b) shows how this relationships helps you to understand your (current or intended) context of teaching/work and how the language teaching programs there are organised
The key information for BOTH the summary of your program and how you relate the ideas in the articles to your context must be clearly presented. Your PowerPoint must be comprehensive and explicit, i.e., a reader must be able to understand everything that you want to communicate from the PowerPoint alone. Do not use layers in your PowerPoint slides.
Your PowerPoint also needs to be easy to read so you cannot write lots of detailed information. Focus on the key information and look for clever visual ways to present it (e.g. photos or other graphics). Use visuals to help your reader to rapidly identify the context and to feel connected to what you are presenting.
You can discuss with colleagues what is important in the two articles, but your presentation must be your own individual work.
2) Upload your PowerPoint to LMS in two places:
(a) the Assessment 1 submission and
(b) the Assessment 1 – Peer assesment.
3) Complete your assessment of three of your peers
The three Assessment Tasks of your peers that you will assess will become available on Wednesday 8 May at 2pm. You will find these by going into the same link in LMS: Assessment 1 – Peer assessment. Complete your peer assessments by Monday 13 May at 11pm Read, grade and comment on the PowerPoints submitted by your three colleagues. (You will not know who has been allocated your presentation This grading will be anonymous – only staff will know who has graded your work or whose work you have graded.) More details about the peer assessment will be provided during the term.
