Communication Between Teacher & Student
Over the years it has always been observed that in majority of the classrooms regardless of the culture, nature of subject teachers/lecturers dominate the talking, as it is generally considered basic medium of teaching. When teachers communicate they try to engage students in various possible ways just to make sure that their message is conveyed effectively and students respond to their messages by either verbal or non-verbal act. In most of the scenarios a two-way communication between teachers and student is also considered as responding from both sides. FIAS (Flanders Interaction Analysis System) is one of the most well known instrument that was developed in order to improve the effective communication between teachers and students, with the help of FIAS it was determined that if the speaker is communicating well enough or not. Few recommendations have been made in order to improve the communication barriers between teacher and student that can be categorized under questioning, explaining and providing feedback. With the help of visual presentations students can take information in small pieces, information that they consider is relevant and important for them, presentations not only help students in absorbing more information but it helps them in remembering the information for a longer period of time. When students are being asked by teachers, they should be awarded enough time so that they can reply to teachers and it is the responsibility of the teacher to provide students with the proper feedback so students can improve themselves in areas where they need to. It won’t be wrong to say that in order to carry out an effective communication teachers should and must know their subject well enough and also their students to whom the message needs to be conveyed. If communication is between teacher and student is not good than the whole effort might go in vain.
